How To Watch the Survivor Season Premiere Live Without Cable

How to watch

Cord-cutters can watch the Survivor season premiere on March 9. The reality show’s twenty-year run returns to Fiji in a compressed 42nd season on CBS. But without a cable subscription or a TV antenna, how can you watch the latest castaways vote each other off the island? Fortunately, live TV streaming services like Sling TV, Fubo, DirecTV Stream, Hulu with Live TV and YouTube TV let you watch CBS. You can also get the CBS stream through Paramount+. Let’s find out which one is right for you!

Watch the Survivor season premiere for free

The only way to watch every Survivor episode for free is to connect an HDTV antenna to your TV. But if streaming is the way you roll, then you can at least catch the season premiere with one of these services’ free trials. The only catch? You have to be a new customer. If you’ve registered before, you won’t get the trial.

There is one live TV streaming service missing from this list: Hulu with Live TV doesn’t offer a free trial.

The cheapest full-featured streaming service has always been Sling TV. You can get some of your favorite channels for a low price, but at the same time, Sling TV subscription plans are the most complicated to figure out. Sling Orange has some channels, Sling Blue has other channels. Then you have a bunch of “Extras” that let you add more channels.

But here’s the gotcha for Survivor fans: you can’t get CBS directly through Sling TV. The streaming company only has deals to carry local streams from NBC and Fox. Even then, the deals only cover the dozen or so markets where those networks own the local station. Sling TV hasn’t done the legwork other streamers have to sign deals with owners of local stations around the country.

Get local channels on Sling TV

That’s where the company’s AirTV Anywhere device comes in. Bundled with an antenna, AirTV lets you watch free over-the-air broadcasts from CBS and other local stations — as many as twenty or thirty depending on where you live. What happens next depends on which AirTV device you get:

  • AirTV Mini - This dongle plugs into your 4K TV and also has apps for Sling TV and Netflix.
  • AirTV 2 - This set-top box connects to your WiFi and streams to any local device running the Sling TV app.
  • AirTV Anywhere - This set-top box has a built-in DVR and supports four local streams and one mobile stream.

When you pay Sling TV for two or three months in advance, they usually offer a discount on the AirTV devices.

If that seems like more trouble than it’s worth to watch the Survivor season premiere, then you have another option. Subscribe to Sling TV for its lineup of basic cable channels and also get a separate subscription to Paramount+. Even when you add the $6 Paramount+ subscription, you’ll be paying less than you would with any of the other services.

Every Sling TV subscription includes a fifty-hour cloud DVR and support for either one or three simultaneous streams. You can upgrade the DVR to two hundred hours.

One of the best values for sports fans, Fubo can stream CBS almost everywhere in the US. When Fubo first started, its plan was to only stream sports channels — especially channels that carry international soccer. But the only way to show the major American sports leagues was to sign deals with the big networks. That meant Fubo became an all-around option for cord-cutters — with lots of sports.

You get all of the major broadcast networks along with most of the popular cable channels. The only exceptions are Warner-owned channels like TBS and TNT. Other than that, it’s a complete package.

Moving from the Starter plan to the Pro plan gives you the same channels with better features. The cloud DVR increases from 250 hours in Starter to 1000 hours in Pro. And simultaneous streaming jumps from three devices to as many as ten devices on your home network and another two on the road.

First it was DirecTV Now, then it was AT&T TV Now, then it was AT&T TV, and now it’s DirecTV Stream. Whatever its name becomes next, this is the streaming service that comes closest to the cable experience — without the cable hassles.

Depending on your subscription, you’ll get the national broadcasters, popular cable channels, regional sports networks and more. In fact, DirecTV Stream has the biggest channel lineup. The only difference between the plans is the number of channels you can watch.

What doesn’t change from plan to plan is DirecTV Stream’s features. Everyone gets the “unlimited” cloud DVR. You can record as much content as you want, but you can’t keep it forever. The DVR deletes anything more than 90 days old. In addition, you can use as many devices as your home network can handle — plus another three on the road.

By itself, cord-cutters have better choices than Hulu with Live TV. The service is fine but other options give you more channels and better features. However, Hulu with Live TV shines when you look at everything else you can get with it.

The single plan has a core lineup of 85+ channels that offers something for everyone. A small upgrade will even remove the commercials from on-demand content. That on-demand library, though, is Hulu’s special sauce. You get content from more channels than are in the live TV service — plus Hulu’s award-winning original shows.

Since Hulu is a Mickey Mouse operation, you can also save money by getting the bundled subscription of Hulu with Live TV, Disney+ and ESPN+.

The streaming service’s features suffer in comparison to competitors. The cloud DVR only records fifty hours of content. A monthly fee will boost that to two hundred hours. By default, only two devices can use Hulu at the same time. Another monthly fee will give you unlimited access at home with support for three mobile devices.

Watch the Survivor season premiere on YouTube TV

The best bet for getting local CBS channels has always been YouTube TV. They simply would not take subscribers unless they had deals to carry all of their network affiliate stations. The monthly subscription includes a comprehensive lineup of local and cable channels. You can add more from YouTube TV’s à-la-carte menu. The company even offers a 4K upgrade that works with seven channels.

YouTube TV is also strong on features. Its “unlimited” cloud DVR will save as many programs as you want. They will expire, but only after nine months. Surprisingly, though, the three-device limit on simultaneous streams can’t be upgraded.

Watch the Survivor season premiere on Paramount+

If your favorite cable-replacement service doesn’t carry your local CBS station, you have another option: Paramount+. You may have heard of it with its old name: CBS All Access. ViacomCBS is the company that owns CBS, MTV, Paramount, and other media studios. Now, it has bundled them together into a single service.

You’ll get live streams of your local CBS station and ViacomCBS cable channels. Plus, you’ll get on-demand streams of Hollywood blockbusters, classic films and Paramount+ originals like Star Trek Strange New Worlds.

Paramount+ doesn’t offer a cloud DVR. Shows like Survivor are available on-demand. But you won’t be able to record sports or other live events.
