Hamilton (2020)

  • Rating: PG-13

Broadway's most popular musical of the decade hits the Disney Plus screen in the filmed stage performance of Hamilton, written and scored by Lin-Manuel Miranda. Our hero travels from his Caribbean roots to a Revolutionary America where he fights the British henchmen, becomes George Washington’s “right-hand man,” marries a Schuyler sister while flirting his way into many hearts, and continues on to play a major role in the creation of our nation’s democracy.

Truly a cultural phenomenon, Hamilton was inspired by the novel by Ron Chernow and became an 11-time Tony Award, Grammy Award, Olivier Award, and Pulitzer Prize-winning musical. If you haven’t had the chance to see it performed live, this film is the perfect way to enjoy the original cast and see Miranda in action.

Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back (1980)

Rating: PG-13

Arguably the most popular Star Wars movie of the series, The Empire Strikes Back is the ultimate “good vs. evil” cinematic tale. After destructive events on the ice planet Hoth, Luke is called to journey to the planet Dagobah where he trains with the old and fiercely iconic jedi, Yoda. But Darth Vader won’t let his ahem-enemy of the force choose the light so willingly, and lures Skywalker to meet his fate in the cloud city of Bespin.

This movie is enjoyed by millions but is best appreciated after episode IV, A New Hope. But don’t worry, you can catch every Star Wars movie to date on Disney Plus.

Frozen (2013)

Rating: PG

Bringing the musical voices of Kristen Bell, Jonathan Groff, Josh Gad, and Broadway’s Idina Menzel to animated life, Frozen has become a must-see movie for viewers of all ages. When Elsa’s quietly-kept magic powers trap their home of Arendelle into an eternal winter, Anna ventures out with her new companion and mountain man Kristoff, his reindeer Sven, and their magically made snowman friend named Olaf to find Elsa and save their home.

The Parent Trap (1998)

Rating: PG

In the iconic story of “twins separated at birth and don’t know each other exist,” Hallie Parker and Annie James grow up on opposite sides of the globe and just so happen to meet at the same summer camp. On a mission to get their parents back together, the twins decide to trade places and scheme their families into reuniting.

Fun fact: Contrary to some conspiracy theories, in order to bring the twins to life, Lindsey Lohan had to act out every scene twice with a “stand-in” body double as the other twin.

Bambi (1942)

Rating: G

Even after 80+ years of the screenplay, Bambi is both a heartbreaking and heartwarming movie that the whole family will know and love. Experience the incredible animation as Bambi and his two friends explore the wonder of the woods, grow up together, and discover their place in the forest.

Avengers: Endgame (2019)

Rating: PG-13

Thanos is put at his wit’s end in the final battle of the series, Avengers: Endgame. With half the planet wiped out, the Avengers - or who’s left of them - must come together to restore order and bring back those who were snapped into the soul stone. This movie marks the tail end of the Infinity series, but don’t worry, it is not the end of the Marvel Universe.

Ideally, any Marvel fanatic will tell you to go all the way back to the original Iron Man and work your way through this action-packed series. Arguably this movie is best viewed after Avengers Infinity War as a 2-part series, but in order to understand the full story, catch all the easter eggs, and really appreciate this movie for the worldwide phenomenon that it is, you’ll want to see these 10 movies first:

  • Captain America: The First Avenger
  • Marvel’s The Avengers
  • Captain America: The Winter Soldier
  • Thor: The Dark World
  • Guardians of the Galaxy
  • Avengers: Age of Ultron
  • Captain America: Civil War
  • Avengers: Infinity War
  • Captain Marvel
  • Ant-Man and the Wasp

Soul (2020)

Rating: PG

Soul is a truly thought-provoking movie that’ll make you reconsider everything that you believe makes you… you. Joe Gardner had the chance of a lifetime on Earth when life ran its course and he found his soul in The Great Before - a fantasy beginning where new souls are created before being born. At first, he is determined to return to his life, but after exploring Earth with soul 22, Joe discovers that there’s a lot more to life than he realized.

This new animated movie is perfect for anyone who enjoys playful stories with a deeper meaning, beautiful animation, or rediscovering the joys of being human.
