The Courier

  • Release Year: 2021
  • Rating: PG-13
  • Stars: 4.5/5

The Courier isn’t just your average spy movie. For starters, it’s based closely, not loosely, on the true story of British businessman Greville Wynn. Wynn was recruited by the UK intelligence agency SIS or MI6 to deliver intel to secret agent Oleg Penkovsky during the Cold War. With Wynn’s help, UK and US forces were able to end the Cuban Missile Crisis.

With Benedict Cumberbatch leading the charge, this movie boasts an excellent cast. It also has moody, film noir-style cinematography that transports viewers back to the 1960s Soviet Union. If you’re a sucker for a good mystery, this pick is perfect for you.

The Map of Tiny Perfect Things

  • Release Year: 2021
  • Rating: PG-13
  • Stars: 4.5/5

In this film, protagonists Mark and Margaret are stuck in the same daily time loop — think modern-day Groundhogs Day with a twist. The movie follows the two young characters as they find themselves living the same day over and over, only to discover the true beauty in the little things in life.

The teenage actors (Kyle Allen and Kathryn Newton) have fantastic screen chemistry, making the film much more enjoyable to watch. This drama film is poignant, at times sad, but also uplifting. While the story centers around two teenagers, this flick is enjoyable for all ages!

Black Box

  • Release Year: 2020
  • Rating: NC-17
  • Stars: 4.5

Black Box is both a psychological thriller and a horror film about a man who would do anything to get his memory back, even if it’s the wrong memory. Nolan wakes up with total amnesia after being in a horrible car accident that killed his wife. Now a single father with a 10-year-old daughter, Nolan struggles to remember how to complete basic tasks or be a good father. He seeks out the help of neurologist Dr. Brooks, who gives him an experimental treatment that turns out to be more than they bargained for.

Actress Phylicia Rashad delivers an electrifying (and at times scary) performance as Dr. Brooks. Mamoudou Athie flawlessly embodies the role of a man who is essentially two different people. The movie raises critical questions about how we view memories and what it means to truly be human, making this a great watch when you’re in the mood for something with a bit of depth.

Words on Bathroom Walls

  • Release Year: 2020
  • Rating: PG-13
  • Stars: 4.6/5

Focusing on a topic that’s not often explored in movies, Words on Bathroom Walls tells the story of Adam, a high school student recently diagnosed with schizophrenia, as he grapples with what it means to have a normal life with a severe mental illness.

The cast of this film did an excellent job of bringing the characters to life. Charlie Plummer nails his performance as Adam, and Andy Garcia shines as Father Patrick. All of the supporting cast members add to the film’s authenticity and relatability. It’s a thoughtful, heartfelt drama that’s sure to shed some light on everyday people living with mental illness.

The Tomorrow War

  • Release Year: 2021
  • Rating: PG-13
  • Stars: 4.1/5

Science teacher Dan Forester is thrust into a not-so-average war — this one takes place in the future. With time travel, aliens, and science-fiction absurdity, we can’t think of a more entertaining plotline. We’re happy to share that this is a free Amazon Prime Video original exclusive to those with the streaming service.

The fighting sequences and frightening alien depictions are only two reasons this movie is a can’t miss. The cast of characters put on a great display of action and emotion, so kick back and enjoy this futuristic take on warfare and aliens!

The Last Unicorn

  • Release Year: 1982
  • Rating: G
  • Stars: 74% Rotten Tomatoes

Some children turn their noses up at older films, especially if the animation looks dated. In that case, you may have to petition your kids to give this one a chance, but they’ll be glad they did! This film is not as easy to digest as some other children’s films, but it makes for a fantastic tale that kids can learn from. The story is intertwined with pain, loss, and an amazing adventure, making the film a real gem.

The movie focuses on a unicorn who goes on a quest to discover if she really is the last of her kind. Her journey comes to a halt when she’s captured by an evil witch and kept as an attraction for her Midnight Carnival. There, the unicorn meets new friends who help her escape and accompany her on her quest to find the rest of the unicorns. It’s a lovely musical that may cause some waterworks!

Brittany Runs a Marathon

  • Release Year: 2019
  • Rating: R
  • Stars: 4.2/5

Brittany Runs a Marathon features Jillian Bell as Brittany Fogler, an overweight young adult living in Manhattan with a less-than-healthy lifestyle. After a doctor deems her overweight, she decides she needs to change. Too broke to pay for a gym membership, she’s finally motivated to jog with her neighbor, with a goal of running the New York City marathon.

As one might imagine, things on Brittany’s fitness journey don’t quite go as planned, but she learns a lot about love, life, and friendship along the way.

Borat Subsequent Moviefilm

  • Release Year: 2020
  • Rating: R
  • Stars: 3.6/5

If you’ve seen Borat and couldn’t stop laughing (and if you haven’t seen it, start by watching that first on Prime Video), you’ll love Borat Subsequent Moviefilm, often referred to as Borat 2. Once again, Sacha Baron Cohen stars as Borat, a journalist from Kazakhstan. His plan is to offer up his daughter Tutar (Maria Bakalova) as a bride to the vice-president of the United States, Mike Pence, and when that backfires, to former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani. Plans quickly go awry and adventures with babysitters, breast implants, and QAnon conspiracy theorists ensue.

The mockumentary was nominated for and has won a number of awards, with its final message encouraging people to vote in the 2020 presidential election.

Heathers

  • Release Year: 1989
  • Rating: R
  • Stars: 4.7/5

Shannon Doherty, Winona Ryder, and Christian Slater star in the cult classic 1980’s film Heathers. The movie, a black comedy, features Veronica as she ditches her snobby high school clique (three girls named Heather) to hang out with the rebellious new kid, Jason. The drama explodes after the teens attend a local party, and events take a dark turn when the girls begin to die. The deaths are staged as suicides, but they’re really murders.

Although this film was originally considered a flop at the box office, over the years, it’s gained a select following and is now revered as a cult classic.

Coming 2 America

  • Release Year: 2021
  • Rating: PG-13
  • Stars: 5.3/10

In the long-awaited sequel to the 1988 hit Coming to America, King Akeem is back and ready to take on the Big Apple once more. But this time, the stakes are a lot higher as Akeem returns to the states in search of his own son.

The movie stays true to its roots, introducing new characters and ideas without alienating fans who loved the 1988 film. It’s also hilarious but not too raunchy, making it appropriate for most family audiences. If you’re looking for some top-notch comedy with an excellent storyline to boot, this may be your next Friday night movie!

One Night in Miami

  • Release Year: 2020
  • Rating: R
  • Stars: 7.1/10

This film from award-winning actress Regina King answers the question of what would happen if Malcolm X, Muhammed Ali, Sam Cooke, and Jim Brown all walked into a bar. The movie takes place in February 1964, a time referred to as an inflection point for the civil rights movement.

One Night in Miami may be historical fiction, but it’s expertly executed and feels plausible to the average viewer. What’s more, the performances delivered by Leslie Odom Jr., Aldis Hodge, and more are standouts, elevating the movie to new heights. Watch the film if you’re in the mood for a good historical fiction flick or just looking for a movie with phenomenal actors.

My Spy

  • Release Year: 2020
  • Rating: PG
  • Stars: Dave Bautista, Kristen Schaal, Ken Jeong

The number one rule that all CIA agents must follow is to never ever blow your cover. So when secret agent JJ (Dave Bautista) discovers that he’s been found out by a nine-year-old girl, you can bet he’s going to do everything in his power to make sure this mistake never comes to the surface—even if that means helping the girl become a spy in her own right.

This movie is a cute watch similar to films like The Game Plan and The Pacifier. It’s pretty funny while striking the right balance between comedy and action to keep you engaged as the plot unravels. In all, My Spy is the perfect film for your next family movie night!

In the past few years, Amazon Prime Video has solidified its place as a top streamer by investing in star-studded original content. This strategy has proven well for the service, earning them enough acclaim to maintain their position as a “Big 3” streamer along with Netflix and Hulu.
