Our favorite movies to watch on Hulu

Rye Lane (2023)

Source: IMDB

Rating: R

What it’s about: Two people who’ve just gone through bad breakups end up spending an eventful day together in South London.

Why we love it: Rye Lane is clever in its ability to be both incredibly funny and heartfelt without falling into the typical cliches of a rom-com. The backdrop of South London adds an extra layer of life and comfort as the city acts as its own character, as well. The best part is that the film is a tight 82 minutes, but the leads’ chemistry and wit will having you wishing it was longer.

Our rating: ❤️‍🩹❤️‍🩹❤️‍🩹❤️‍🩹 4.5 out of 5 mended hearts. This movie does so well with carving out its own section of the rom-com genre that it’s a slight shame when we reach the seemingly inevitable third act break-up. Thankfully, it doesn’t last too long and is still done in a way that is unique to this film.

She’s The Man (2006)

Source: IMDB

Rating: PG-13

What it’s about: After the girls soccer team at her high school is cut, Viola decides to take her brother’s place at his new boarding school while he’s off in London for a few weeks. Things start to take a turn when she ends up falling for his roommate/teammate. This movie is based on the Shakespeare play Twelfth Night.

Why we love it: Nostalgia alone is enough to fuel this recommendation, but She’s The Man is incredibly funny and enjoyable to watch even in 2023. Carried wonderfully by Amanda Bynes in her prime and serving as an introduction to the lovely Channing Tatum, this movie hails as one of the better comedies of the early 2000s.

Our rating: ⚽⚽⚽⚽ 4 out of 5 soccer balls. As much as this movie holds up, it’s still an early 2000s comedy, and with that comes a dash of dated humor and concepts. But it’s not enough to leave a sour taste in your mouth after watching. If anything, you’ll laugh even more, albeit for different reasons.

Little Monsters (2019)

Source: IMDB

Rating: R

What it’s about: In Little Monsters, Dave agrees to chaperone on his young nephew’s class field trip when things take a turn for the sinister. A zombie outbreak occurs while the kids are at the zoo and now it’s up to Dave and the children’s teacher, Miss Caroline, to protect them and get them home to safety.

Why we love it: Of all the genre splicing that goes on in film, horror and comedy are two that always work well together and this movie is a testament of that. It’s not particularly scary in the way that a typical zombie film could be, but the off-kilter Australian humor and plentiful gore, topped off with killer performances by Lupita Nyong’o, Alexander England, and Josh Gad, make this a must-see for all horror-comedy fans.

Our rating: 🧟🧟🧟🧟 4 out of 5 zombies. It’s not the most show-stopping or jaw dropping film you’ve ever seen, but it’s still a fantastic film with a fun premise and lots of laughs. Plus, it’s just over 90 minutes, making it an easy choice to add into any Halloween or horror-based rotations.

Barbarian (2022)

Source: IMDB

Rating: R

What it’s about: While in Detroit for a job interview, a woman checks into her Airbnb to find that someone else is already staying there.

Why we love it: Barbarian is bonkers, to say the least. Having heard little about the film other than that we needed to see it was all the convincing we needed and it more than paid off. If you like your horror to be a bit more grotesque, with some pieces of circumstantial humor sprinkled in, watch this film as soon as you can.

Our rating: 🍼🍼🍼 3.7 out of 5 baby bottles. This is one of those movies where the shock is the biggest draw. But because of that, it brings down the re-watchability of the film. The movie’s also trying to speak to larger, social themes of accountability and what it means to be a good person, and within the context of the film, falls a bit flat. It’s hard to say what point the filmmakers were trying to make and feels somewhat out of place in a wild horror film like this one.

Fire Island (2022)

Source: Searchlight Pictures

Rating: R

What it’s about: An adaptation of the classic Pride & Prejudice, the film follows a group of queer friends headed to their annual vacation at Fire Island. When a change of events takes place, the group’s initial plan for a week of love and laughs takes a sharp left turn.

Why we love it: The best way to retell old stories is to attach them to new faces and lived experiences and Fire Island does just that. Our main cast of characters are such a fun bunch, you’ll feel like you’re hanging out in the room with them. But they’re also incredibly different people with fully fleshed out personalities and desires, and to see each of them navigate their journeys both inside and outside of each other is highly rewarding.

Our rating: 🏖️🏖️🏖️🏖️ 4.5 out of 5 islands. Like we said earlier with Rye Lane, every rom-com has beats that it needs to hit. But in this case, the third act break-up is largely quite justified (depending on which character we’re talking about). With so much else to love in this movie, by the time the cliches roll in, you’ll be welcoming them with open arms.

Shrek 2 (2004)

Source: IMDB

Rating: PG

What it’s about: After finding their happily ever after, Shrek and Fiona are met with another daunting quest—meeting Fiona’s parents, the King and Queen of Far, Far Away.

Why we love it: This is a classic, period, point blank. This movie raised a generation and at one point was one of the highest grossing movies of all time. Everyone’s seen this, probably more than once, but it’s always worth rewatching for its cast, constant jokes and pop culture references, and for its unbelievable soundtrack.

Our rating: 🏰🏰🏰🏰🏰 5 out of 5 kingdoms of Far, Far Away. If Shrek 2 has any faults, we can’t see them because we’re just having too much fun! For all of its crass jokes and 2004-specific references—which are all still funny, btw—, there’s so much else to like about this film, from its numerous action scenes, entertaining takes on the fairytale space, and the love story between Shrek and Fiona at the center.
