1. Luca
- Release Year: 2021
- Rating: PG
- Stars: 7.5/10 IMDb
Luca is one of Disney’s most recent releases and one of the best kids’ movies on Disney Plus right now. This coming-of-age story focuses on the misadventures of two young sea creatures who become human on land but explore the sea as aquatic animals. In true Disney fashion, parts of the story take inspiration from regional Italian folklore.
The story starts with Luca and his newfound sea creature friend, Alberto. Luca’s parents forbid him from approaching the water’s surface, as they fear humans might hunt him—but of course, Luca and Alberto can’t help their curiosity. They decide to go on land to explore the human world, attempting to win a Vespa to support their travels. Along the way, the two befriend Giulia, who helps them towards their goal.Â
2. Raya and the Last Dragon
- Release Year: 2021
- Rating: PG
- Stars: 7.4/10 IMDb
Raya and the Last Dragon shows that modern-day Disney princesses take the form of courageous heroes. The martial arts featured in this Disney film are inspired by six different Southeast Asian styles, so our protagonist Raya is quite the skilled martial artist! In addition to being a brave warrior, she’s a fantastic role model for young children because of her relentless independence and constant compassion.Â
Based in the fantasy realm Kumandra, Raya seeks the last dragon to help save humanity. In a previous era where humans and dragons coexisted, almost all of the dragons sacrificed themselves to rid of evil and save the humans. Now, evil is again banging on humanity’s door—but this time, it’s up to Raya to save them. Through a series of misadventures, Raya and a rag-tag team of characters work together to save the planet.
3. Onward

- Rating: PG
- Stars: 7.4/10 IMDb
If you love Dungeons and Dragons, you’re going to love Onward. In fact, the protagonists wouldn’t be able to complete their quest without knowledge of the game! Brothers Barley and Gaxton live in a magical world where magic has died out and supposedly no longer exists; however, they find out that their late father has relics of long-forgotten magic.
Timid Gaxton and headstrong Barley work together to bring their father back to life for just an afternoon. When they attempt a magical spell too soon, only their father’s legs come back—but that doesn’t stop them! A hilarious series of adventures and battles follow as the brothers work to bring their father back to his full form. All in all, Onward is a heartfelt, beautiful kids’ movie made for the whole family.
