Philo is definitely the cheapest option on our list if you’re interested in Sundance TV. Here’s everything you need to know about this entertainment-focused internet TV service.

Channels and pricing

Philo has two basic channel packages, which offer 43 and 55 channels.

Sundance TV is included in the cheapest $16/month, 43 channel package. You’ll also get other top entertainment networks like A&E, AMC, IFC, Comedy Central, and more. The 55 channel package includes all of the lower-tier channels, and also gives you more channels like Cooking Channel, Nicktoons, and REVOLT.

Uniquely, Philo has no local network affiliates or sports channels. This is because these channels are very expensive. By removing them from their lineup, Philo can offer a competitive lineup of entertainment and lifestyle channels for a very low price.

Features

Philo doesn’t just have good channels at a low price. Another reason it’s a top pick for how to watch Sundance TV without cable is due to its great features.

First, you can stream on up to 3 devices at once, which is better than the industry average, and gives you some extra flexibility if you’re sharing your account. You also get an unlimited 30-day cloud DVR. You can record as much content as you want, and 72-Hour Rewind lets you watch most shows that you didn’t record from the last 3 days, in case you forget to record an important show or movie.

Device support is still Philo’s weak spot, though it’s getting better. You can watch on iOS and web browsers, but there is no dedicated Android app yet, which is a shame. In the living room, you can watch Philo on Roku and Apple TV, as well as on Android TV. If you’d like to try Philo, you can get started with a free 7-day trial now.

Sling TV

Sling TV is the oldest internet TV service, and has been around since early 2015. It still offers a good lineup of channels at a reasonable price, and is a great way to watch Sundance TV without cable.

Channels and pricing

Sling TV has a somewhat confusing pricing and package model. Let’s break it down.

Simultaneous Streams134*

* You get one stream with Sling Orange and up to 3 simultaneous streams with Sling Blue.

Sling Orange and Sling Blue both cost $25, but have some exclusive channels. Sling Orange has ESPN and Disney-owned channels, for example, while Sling Blue has Fox Sports and some other exclusives.

However, both packages also share some channels. If you want what both packages have to offer, you can get Sling Orange + Blue for $40/month.

Sundance TV isn’t included with any of these packages, though. It’s part of Sling TV’s a la carte “Extras.” You’ll find Sundance TV in the “Hollywood Extra” package, which costs $5/month and also comes with Fandor, TCM, Reelz, HDNET Movies, and The Film Detective, to name a few.

Features

Sling TV’s features vary based on which package you choose. Sling Orange channels can only be streamed on a single device, while Sling Blue channels can be streamed on three devices. This restriction remains in place with Sling Orange + Blue, although channels shared between both services can be viewed on 4 devices at once. The number of Sundance TV streams you’ll get depends on your base Sling package.

You also don’t get a cloud DVR with Sling for free. You’ll pay $5/month for 50 hours of storage, which brings your cost to get Sundance TV AND cloud DVR to $35/month with Sling Blue or Orange, or $50/month if you get Orange + Blue

Device support is good, though. iOS, Android, and web browsers are supported, as is the Amazon Fire TV, Roku, Chromecast, and Apple TV. Xbox One is also supported, as are some Samsung and LG smart TVs. If you’d like to give Sling a try, you can check it out with a free 7-day trial now.

YouTube TV

Source: YouTube TV

YouTube TV launched in late 2017, and is Google’s attempt to break into the cord-cutting market. But is it a good way to watch Sundance TV without cable? Find out now.

Channels and pricing

YouTube TV simplifies things, compared to our other picks. You only get a single package of channels, which will cost you $40/month. This gets you a total of 60+ channels, depending on your location, and includes Sundance TV, as well as FX, IFC, TNT, TBS, USA, and a number of other entertainment, sports, and news channels. For the price, it’s a very good selection of channels.

Features

YouTube TV offers a good selection of channels at a reasonable price, but where it really excels is with the features it offers. First, you can stream on 3 devices at once, which is better than the industry average.

But YouTube TV blows the competition out of the water with its DVR service. You can record unlimited shows for up to 9 months, with no other restrictions or limitations. In addition, you can create up to 6 individual user profiles, each of which gets their own DVR.

Device support for YouTube TV is also good. There is no Fire TV support, thanks to a long-standing Amazon-Google feud, but you can watch YouTube TV on iOS, Android, Roku, Chromecast, and Apple TV, as well as the Xbox One, and a wide range of smart TVs from Samsung, Hisense, VIZIO, Sharp and more.

PlayStation Vue

Source: PlayStation Vue

PlayStation Vue, by Sony, has struggled to gain a large market share. However, due to its family-friendly features, it’s definitely a great way to watch Sundance TV without cable if you have a larger household.

Channels and pricing

With Playstation Vue, you’ll get a total of four different channel package options, allowing you to choose what’s right for you based on your budget and the number of channels you’d like.

  • Access – 45+ channels, $45/month
  • Core – 60+ channels, $50/month
  • Elite – 80+ channels, $60/month
  • Ultra – All Elite channels plus HBO/Showtime, $80/month

Sundance TV is not included in the base-tier Access package, so you’ll need to purchase the Core package or higher to watch Sundance TV without cable. At $50/month, this may seem a bit steep, but it’s a lot cheaper than a traditional cable service, and you’ll get 60+ channels including USA, TNT, TBS, AMC, FX, and IFC.

Features

The most standout feature of PlayStation Vue is its simultaneous streaming policy. Depending on the devices you’re using, you can stream on up to 5 different screens at once, for no extra charge. This is, far and away, the best simultaneous streaming offer you can get without paying additional fees.

The DVR is also pretty good. You can record as many shows as you want with a 28-day recording limit. You can create multiple user profiles, and each user gets their own DVR and recommendations, making it even easier to share your subscription.

And, despite the name, PlayStation Vue is available on more than just the PlayStation 3 and 4 consoles. You can also watch on iOS and Android, web browsers, Amazon Fire TV, Chromecast, Apple TV, and Roku.

DirecTV Now

Source: DirecTV Now

DirecTV Now, which is owned by AT&T, is their attempt to salvage some of the cord-cutting market. However, it’s the most expensive choice on our list, and is a bit lacking when it comes to features.

Channels and pricing

DirecTV Now, like PlayStation Vue, allows you to choose between four different channel packages based on your needs.

  • Live A Little – 65+ channels, $40/month
  • Just Right – 85+ channels, $55/month
  • Go Big – 105+ channels, $65/month
  • Gotta Have It  – 125+ channels, $75/month

Unfortunately, Sundance TV is not included in the $40/month Live A Little Package. You’ll have to fork out an extra $15/month for the Just Right package. On the bright side, though, you’ll get 80+ top channels, including entertainment channels like FX and FXX, as well as IFC, TNT, TBS, TCM, and SyFy.

Features

DirecTV Now has a disappointing DVR, which was first introduced in the middle of 2018. It’s included in the subscription price, but you only get 20 hours of storage and comes with a 30-day content expiration limit, making this the worst DVR in the internet TV industry.

On a brighter note, you can stream on 2 devices at once and upgrade to a third stream for $5/month, which is reasonable, and in line with other internet TV services.

DirecTV Now also has excellent device support. Android and iOS devices are supported, as are web browsers, Roku, Amazon Fire TV, Chromecast, Apple TV, and some Samsung smart TVs.

Sundance TV Website & Apps

watch sundance tv without cable online apps
Source: Sundance TV

If you subscribe to Sundance TV through one of the above services, you can log into the Sundance TV website and the apps for Android, iOS, and Apple TV just like you would with a traditional cable subscription – with one exception.

While Philo, fuboTV, DirecTV Now, Playstation Vue, and YouTube TV all support logging into the Sundance TV website and apps, Sling TV doesn’t, and it’s unclear why. Perhaps in the future, you will be able to log into Sundance TV with Sling, but as of publication time, this is not possible.

Why bother doing this? Well, it’s nice to have the extra flexibility, and there’s a hidden bonus to using the app or website to watch live TV – it doesn’t use up one of your streams.

For example, watching TV on the Sundance TV app wouldn’t count towards your 2-stream limit if you subscribe to DirecTV Now. Your family or other household members could both watch a DirecTV Now stream, and you can still watch Sundance TV live, without any interruptions.

Sundance NOW

Don’t want to subscribe to an internet TV service? Unfortunately, that’s the only way to watch Sundance TV without cable. However, if you’re mostly just interested in on-demand movies and TV shows, the Sundance NOW streaming service may be right for you.

This ad-free service starts at $5/month, and offers a number of original dramas, true crime shows, and exclusive movies, like Memento, Chasing Amy, Frank, and The Two Faces of January. You won’t be able to watch Sundance TV live, but you will get many of the same shows and movies – so this is a reasonably good alternative.
