Interested in Comedy Central shows like South Park, Workaholics, and The Daily Show With Trevor Noah – but don’t want to pay over $100 a month for cable?

This guide will show you best options for watching Comedy Central without cable. You’ll earn about the best ways to watch Comedy Central live, and see which services have VOD episodes of your favorite Comedy Central shows.

Watching Comedy Central Live Without Cable

If you want to watch Comedy Central live programming without cable, the best way is with what’s called a “skinny bundle.”

Skinny bundle companies like DirecTV Now and PlayStation Vue allow consumers to buy access to a limited selection of cable channels for a monthly fee.

While these services usually do not include all of the top cable channels, they cost much less than a cable subscription, and do not have any contract obligations. This makes them perfect for cord-cutters. Here are your options.

Philo

Philo is one of the newest skinny bundles on the market. It started as a service tailored to college students who did not have cable and has become one of the best choices for cord-cutters who don’t care for sports.

For just $16/month, you can get a 43 channel package that includes Comedy Central, AMC and A&E, Nick, HGTV and BBC America, among others. You can also bump up to a $20/month subscription which will give you The Cooking Channel, MTV Live, and Nicktoons, alongside 12 more channels.

Philo also has a great DVR and simultaneous streaming policy. You get a 30-day DVR for no extra cost, with no recording restrictions or limitations. You can also stream on up to 3 devices at once. This is better than both Sling Orange and DirecTV Now.

You won’t get any kind of sports coverage, though. This is why Philo is so cheap. You won’t get ESPN or Fox Sports, or local FOX/NBC/ABC/CBS channels. If you are a sports fan, Philo is definitely not the right choice for you.

Another limitation is that Philo is not supported on most streaming platforms yet. You can only use it on web browsers, iOS, Apple TV, Amazon Frie TV, and some Roku streaming devices. There is no support for Google Cast devices and Philo also does not work with Android except through the web browser. There is no native Android app at this time. Philo is currently developing apps for these platforms.

The bottom line

Philo is the least expensive way to watch Comedy Central live, and has better features than both DirecTV Now and Sling TV. If you don’t care about sports or local TV coverage, this is certainly the best pick for you. The service has also been adding channels without increasing its price, which makes it unique in the streaming world and a potentially good bet for those who want a service that’s hesitant to raise prices.

Sling TV

Sling TV offers Comedy Central in both the Orange and Blue package.

* You get one stream with Sling Orange and up to 3 simultaneous streams with Sling Blue.

The Orange package includes Comedy Central in its 30 channel bundle, and costs $20/month. It’s cheap, but one of the biggest limitations of Sling Orange is that you can only watch Sling Orange streams on one device at a time. You won’t be able to share your subscription at all.

The Blue package includes Comedy Central and 40+ other channels, depending on your location. It costs $25/month. One of its biggest benefits is that Sling Blue lets you stream on 3 devices at once, unlike Sling Orange.

If cost is not an object, you can also combine Blue and Orange for $40/month. However, in our opinion, DirecTV Now offers a better selection of channels for a lower price. Despite lacking a DVR, it’s a better choice compared to Sling Orange + Blue.

One other drawback of Sling Orange and Blue is that neither package includes DVR service. You’ll have to pay an extra $5/month for DVR service – so the true cost is $25/month for Sling Orange and $30/month for Sling Blue.

Sling TV’s DVR is fairly standard. You will get 50 total hours of storage on Sling’s cloud network, and content never expires. However, some networks such as ESPN block DVR functionality entirely.

Supported platforms include iOS and Android, all widely used web browsers, LG and Samsung Smart TVs, and the Xbox One. You can also watch on streaming platforms like Amazon Fire TV, Roku, Apple TV, and Chromecast.

The bottom line

Sling TV is best for you if you’re interested in a low-cost way to watch Comedy Central but also want some sports coverage. You can try Sling TV out for yourself now with a 7-day trial on their website.

DirecTV Now

DirecTV Now includes Comedy Central in its least expensive package, the $35/month “Just the Good Stuff” package. For the price, DirecTV definitely has the best lineup of cable channels on the market.

You’ll get Comedy Central, as well as other entertainment networks such as Cartoon Network and Discovery, sports coverage from ESPN and Fox Sports, and news coverage from CNN and CNBC, among others. It includes a total of 60+ channels, depending on your geographic location.

Another benefit is that DirecTV Now gives you a “TV Everywhere” login.

TV Everywhere is a service that lets customers use their cable login to access on-demand streams on cable websites and apps. You can use this login to access live streams and VOD content on dozens of different websites, including Comedy Central, Discovery, AMC and many more.

You can only stream on 2 devices at once with DirecTV Now, but that may be acceptable if you don’t have a large family. DirecTV Now plans to increase the limit to 3 simultaneous streams this spring.

Our biggest problem with DirecTV Now is it’s DVR service – or rather, its complete lack of DVR service. You can’t record any programs on DirecTV Now.

While there is a DVR beta program, it is limited to a very select number of subscribers, and DirecTV has still not revealed any information about a potential launch date for current customers.

On the plus side, though, DirecTV Now has good platform support. You can watch it on most devices, including Roku, Amazon Fire devices, Chromecast and Apple TV, as well as web browsers and Android/iOS devices.

The bottom line

At $35/month, DirecTV Now is the most expensive way to watch Comedy Central without cable. However, the only real flaw DirecTV Now has is the lack of DVR support.

If you can overlook that, you’ll get a good channel list and consistent service, as well as TV Everywhere credentials. You can see for yourself if you like the service with a free 7-day trial.

Watching Comedy Central On-Demand Without Cable

If you don’t want to watch live streams of Comedy Central, you have plenty of options for viewing your favorite Comedy Central shows on-demand. Here are our top picks.

CC.com

comedy central watch free content online cable alternative streaming cable

Comedy Central has a lot of free content accessible on their website. You can watch full, recently-aired episodes of shows like The Daily Show With Trevor Noah and The Opposition With Jordan Klepper, as well as select episodes from the Comedy Central back catalog.

There are also a wide variety of clips from stand-up comedians like John Oliver, Kevin Hart, Patton Oswalt, and Daniel Tosh available. Considering that all of this content is totally free, it’s a fantastic selection.

You can also watch live Comedy Central shows if you have a DirecTV Now login, or a login from a cable or satellite provider. This will allow you to unlock a huge archive of Comedy Central content.

You will be able to watch full episodes of all of the most recently-aired shows, and plenty of archived content. This is definitely one of the biggest benefits of DirecTV Now. No other “skinny bundle” allows you to unlock the Comedy Central site.

The Comedy Central app

The Comedy Central app is available on both iOS and Android. It offers a mobile-friendly view of the cc.com website, and provides the same basic functionality and content.

You can also download the Comedy Central app on a wide variety of different streaming platforms. It includes Chromecast, Roku, Apple TV and Amazon Fire TV support, and is also available on the Xbox One.

Comedy Central on YouTube

Comedy Central has a great YouTube presence. You won’t find any full episodes here, but you will find an enormous selection of clips both from newly-aired shows like Corporate and Broad City, and classic Comedy Central shows like Chappelle’s Show, Key & Peele, and Workaholics.

You can also enjoy online exclusives such as Drunk History, and clips from hundreds of stand-up comedy specials. There’s plenty to watch and enjoy, and it’s all totally free.

Comedy Central on Hulu

hulu with live tv comedy central cable alternative streaming

Hulu With Live TV does not include Comedy Central, but a standard $8/month subscription will get you access to a lot of Comedy Central content.

Currently, Hulu has the following Comedy Central shows:

  • South Park
  • Workaholics
  • Broad City
  • Key & Peele
  • Drunk History
  • Inside Amy Schumer
  • Brickleberry

New episodes are usually available the day after they air, so if you don’t mind missing out on live shows, a Hulu subscription is definitely a great value.

Of course, you will also get access to thousands of hours of content from other networks, as well as Hulu Originals like The Handmaid’s Tale and Marvel’s Runaways series.

Comedy Central on Amazon Video

amazon prime video comedy central shows on demand cable alternative

If you’re a fan of a few specific Comedy Central shows, you may want to simply purchase individual episodes from Amazon Video.

Amazon has a huge selection of shows from Comedy Central, including:

  • Reno: 911
  • Broad City
  • Chappelle’s Show
  • South Park
  • Drunk History
  • Corporate
  • Workaholics
  • Key & Peele
  • Nathan For You
  • The Daily Show With Trevor Noah
  • Another Period
  • Ugly Americans

This is only a partial list. Many more can be found simply by searching Amazon Video.

Episodes will cost you $2 apiece for SD, and $3 apiece for HD, in most cases. Usually, you can purchase an entire season of a particular show for a large discount.

For example, you can get Broad City season 1 for $20. This is a significant cost savings compared to buying all 10 episodes individually for $30.

If you plan on buying multiple seasons of your favorite shows, the costs can add up quickly. However, if you only follow one or two Comedy Central shows closely, purchasing individual episodes and seasons may be worth the investment.

Additional Options to Consider

Here are two newer options that exist, but that are not our top picks. We’ve researched them and determined they’re legitimate, but they may have limited staying power in a crowded market. We recommend you only sign up if you’re ok taking on the risk that these options might close up shop in the near future.

HD HomeRun Premium TV

HD HomeRun Premium TV offers Comedy Central in its single, $34.99 per month subscription plan. You’ll also get 44 other popular cable TV channels, with a mix of entertainment, news, and sports.

Red Stick Wireless – Red Stick TV

You can sign up to this streaming service for $29.99 and get over 70 channels. There are a lot of small details with this one, and adding movie channels nearly doubles the price. That said, it’s an option we’re keeping an eye on.

The Best Way to Watch Comedy Central Live Without Cable – Our Verdict

The best value

Philo comes away with the crown here. For just $16/month, you get plenty of channels with 3 simultaneous streams and a great DVR. Though you will miss out on local programming and sports coverage, Philo is still the best way to watch Comedy Central without cable if you’re on a budget.

The most channel coverage

DirecTV Now has 60+ channels for $35/month, with no significant gaps in coverage. You can also use your DirecTV Now login on cc.com and the Comedy Central App.

You don’t get a DVR and can’t stream on more than 2 devices at once. Still, DirecTV Now gives you the best overall package of channels for your money

Runner-up

Sling TV is a decent skinny bundle provider, but it doesn’t have enough features to be a top pick for our list.

If you add on a DVR, Sling Orange is $25/month, and you still only get 1 stream. Compared to Philo’s 3-stream policy and no-extra-cost DVR, it’s not really worth it unless you really want ESPN and other sports networks.

Sling Blue is $30/month with a DVR, which is nearly as much as DirecTV Now. But while you do get a DVR and three-device streaming, you will miss out on a TV Everywhere login, and you won’t get access to popular channels like ESPN and Disney networks.

Combining Sling Orange + Blue is also not a great deal. It costs $40 ($45 with a DVR), and you still get fewer channels than you would with DirecTV Now.

Sling TV costs more than Philo and nearly as much as DirecTV Now if you add on DVR service. But Philo has better features, and DirecTV Now has more channels.
