Considered the “low-cost leader” in the market for live TV, Philo offers several dozen entertainment and news channels at rock-bottom prices. The service maintains a great set of features, even for its low cost, and has shown no signs of stopping its rapid growth.

Philo Pricing and Packages

Philo now offers one package: nearly 60 channels for $20/month.

7-day free trial
$20.00/ month

As Philo only offers one package and no add-ons, you’ll get MotorTrend immediately upon signing up.

For more information on Philo plans, check here.

Philo Channels

That option includes MotorTrend TV, as well as a large number of must-have networks, such as Discovery, History, National Geographic, FYI, MTV, BBC America, and many more.

What’s the reason behind Philo’s low cost? There are no sports. If you’re a sports fan, Philo may not be the best option for you, or you may want to supplement it with another cord-cutting option. However, Philo’s success in the market thus far proves there’s a good number of us that don’t mind having a cheap, entertainment TV-focused TV option without sports.

For more information on Philo channels, check here.

Philo Supported Devices

Philo also has good (but not great) device support. You can download and watch Philo on dedicated apps for iOS devices, Apple TV, Android TV, Amazon Fire TV, and Roku. You can also watch directly from your web browser. Unfortunately, the service has not yet added a native app for Android devices. You’ll need to watch through the Chrome browser on your Android device, which can be a bit battery-intensive.

The full list includes:

  • TV streaming media players: Apple TV (4th gen and up), Amazon Fire TV (all models), Chromecast and Roku (all current models)
  • Smart TVs: Android TV (5.0 and up)
  • Mobile devices and tablets: Android (7.0 and up, Chrome browser), iOS (10.3 and up)
  • Gaming consoles: None
  • Desktop browsers: Most Mac and PC browsers

Check here for more information on Philo’s supported devices.

Philo Simultaneous Streams

Philo has among the best features on the market. Each account offers 3 simultaneous streams so that three people can watch TV on different devices at the same time. You can even create two unique user profiles with each account.

To learn more about Philo’s simultaneous streams, click here.

Philo DVR

Philo offers a 30-day cloud DVR with each subscription. You can record as much as you want, but any video recording will expire after 30 days. If you forget to record something, many of Philo’s channels offer a 72-hour rewind for videos. That way, you can catch most live TV episodes that you missed or forgot to record up to 3 days after they air.

Check here to learn more about Philo’s DVR.

Philo On-Demand Library

You can watch thousands of hours of on-demand content through Philo. Most channels offer their newest and most popular shows through Philo, although you will find there are limits. No channel offers all of its content through Philo. Instead, you’ll need to use your account information to log in to different channels’ websites and apps where they keep most of their on-demand content.

Watch MotorTrend on Sling TV

sling tv velocity without cable motortrend tv without cable
Source: Sling TV

There’s a good chance you’ve probably already heard of Sling TV. This low-cost internet TV “skinny bundle” service was one of the first on the market and continues to be one of the biggest players in the industry. Sling TV offers MotorTrend without cable at a price that’s above what you’ll pay for Philo, but well below any of the other options on our list.

Sling TV Pricing and Packages

Sling TV offers three different channel packages for subscribers:

* You get 1 stream for Sling Orange channels and up to 3 simultaneous streams for Sling Blue channels.

For those who want to get Velocity/MotorTrend TV, however, there’s only one option: Sling Orange.

To learn more about Sling TV pricing, check here.

Sling TV Channels

The $25/month Sling Orange subscription includes MotorTrend TV, as well as over 30 other TV channels. Disney-owned networks are the backbone of Sling Orange, so you’ll get a few ESPN networks and Disney Channel, among other interesting options. Sling Orange is great, but somewhat limited compared to Sling Blue in terms of its features (more below).

To learn more about Sling TV channels, check here.

Sling TV Supported Devices

One of the best things about Sling TV is its device coverage. There are dedicated apps for iOS, Android, Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV, Roku, some LG TVs, and Xbox consoles. You can also stream directly from your web browser.

The full list of options includes:

  • TV streaming media players: Apple TV (4th gen and up), Amazon Fire TV (all versions), Chromecast, Roku (LT and up), AirTV,
  • Smart TVs: LG TV (Web OS 3.0, 3.5, and 4.0, as well as select 2016-2018 models), Samsung TV (2016 through 2018 models), Android TV (4.4 and up), Roku TV, Mi TV,
  • Mobile devices and tablets: Android (4.4 and up),  iOS (11 and up), Amazon Fire (tablets)
  • Game consoles: Xbox One
  • Desktop browsers: Chrome on Mac and Windows recommended

Check here for more info on Sling TV’s supported devices.

Sling TV Simultaneous Streams

With Sling Orange, you’ll be able to stream on just one device at a time. This is the most limited simultaneous streaming feature on the market of any service. It’s also much worse than what you’d get with Sling Blue, which offers 3 simultaneous streams.

Should you feel Sling Orange is too limited, you can combine it with Sling Blue with the Sling Orange + Blue package for $40/month. That will get you around 50 channels and will increase your simultaneous streaming options, at least for any channels in the Sling Blue package.

To learn more about Sling TV’s simultaneous streams, click here.

Sling TV DVR

If you want cloud DVR with Sling TV, you’ll need to purchase a $5/month add-on. Sling’s DVR is somewhat sizeable for the price, however, at 50 hours with no time-based expiration on recordings.

To learn more about Sling TV’s DVR, check here.

Sling TV On-Demand Library

Sling TV makes hundreds of titles available on-demand through its service. That will include movies and TV shows, as well as some sporting events. Which content is available is mostly channel-specific, as each channel provides its own content separately. However, your Sling TV account information will work to log in to many channels’ separate websites and apps.

That said, Sling TV won’t work to log in to the MotorTrend TV app.

*Note that AT&T TV Now offers several other plans that are hidden until you click to sign up.

However, if you want MotorTrend, you’ll need to dig deeper and find its larger options. MotorTrend is only available through its $93 per month “Entertainment” package, or its other far more expensive package offerings not listed on the main page.

To learn more about AT&T TV Now’s pricing and packages, click here.

AT&T TV Now Channels

If you’re opting for the “Entertainment” package, you’ll get 65+ channels. Unfortunately, while “PLUS” and “MAX” include HBO, Entertainment won’t. You’ll still get MotorTrend and many other popular networks, like AMC, HGTV, and A&E, as well as some sports networks.

Click here to learn more about AT&T TV Now’s channels.

AT&T TV Now Supported Devices

Device support is pretty good, though, and AT&T TV Now is on the same level as the competition in this regard. You can stream on a large number of dedicated apps, including on iOS, Android, Apple TV, Android TV, Roku, several smart TV brands, and Xbox consoles.

Here’s a full list of available apps:

  • TV streaming media players: Apple TV (4th gen and up, 5th gen and up for 4K), Amazon Fire TV (2nd gen and up, 1st gen for Cube), Chromecast (2nd gen and up), Roku (most models)
  • Smart TVs: Samsung TV (2017 and 2018 models), Android TV (4.4 and up), Roku TV (7000X), Mi TV, Amazon Fire TV edition smart TV (2nd gen and up), Chromecast Built-in TV

  • Desktop browsers: Chrome and Safari recommended

AT&T TV Now Simultaneous Streams

On a positive note, you’ll get 2 simultaneous streams per account (industry average), which can be expanded to 3 with a $5/month add-on.

To learn more about AT&T TV Now’s streaming policy, click here.

AT&T TV Now DVR

AT&T TV Now provides a cloud DVR, but it’s a bit lackluster. The cloud DVR option only offers 20 hours of storage but comes with a 30-day expiration date on videos.

Click here to learn more about AT&T TV Now’s DVR.

AT&T TV Now On-Demand Library

With so many channels, AT&T TV Now is a good option for on-demand content. Most channels offer a selection of their shows and content through AT&T TV Now, but they won’t provide all of their content libraries. AT&T TV Now will work to unlock content on most channels’ individual websites and apps.

You can use your AT&T TV Now login information to unlock even more content through most channels’ website and TV Everywhere apps.
