PlayStation Vue: Best FuboTV Alternative for Sharing

playstation vue fubotv alternatives 2019
Source: PlayStation Vue

PlayStation Vue has a wide selection of sports and entertainment channels, as well as some add-ons to add to your sports viewing options. But it’s also the best option on the market for account sharing, making it a far better option than fuboTV if you have multiple users in your household.

PlayStation Vue Pricing and Packages

Much like fuboTV, PlayStation Vue offers multiple streaming packages, although at a lower starting price. PlayStation Vue starts at $49.99 per month for 45+ channels per month.

* You get 3 streams to use in-home or out-of-home streams and 2 extra streams to use in-home.

The higher-tier channel packages include a wider selection of channels, and PlayStation Vue also offers a sports-focused package (Core) with almost every sports channel the service has to offer.

You can learn more about PlayStation Vue’s pricing and packages here.

PlayStation Vue Channels

You’ll find PlayStation Vue offers almost every sports channel you’d be able to get through fuboTV, with only a few exceptions. You won’t get beIN Sports from PlayStation Vue, for example, but you can get multiple ESPN channels, Big Ten Network, CBS Sports, FOX Sports, NBA TV, Tennis Channel, NFL Network, Stadium, and more.

To learn more about PlayStation Vue’s channels, check here.

PlayStation Vue Supported Devices

One of fuboTV’s weaknesses is its lack of supported devices. PlayStation Vue easily bests fuboTV in the number of devices you can use it to stream on. Despite the confusing name, PlayStation Vue offers apps for every popular TV-connected device, many smart TVs, and as expected, PlayStation consoles.

A full list of PlayStation Vue supported devices includes:

  • TV streaming media players: Apple TV (4th gen and up), Android TV (all gens), Amazon Fire TV and Fire TV Stick (all gens), Chromecast (1st gen and up) and Roku (firmware 8.0 and up)
  • Smart TVs: Amazon Fire TV (all gens), Android TV (all gens) and Roku (firmware 8.0 and up).
  • Mobile devices and tablets: Android OS 5.0 and up, iOS 9 and up, and Amazon Fire HD6 tablets and up
  • Game consoles: PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4
  • Desktop browsers: Chrome, Firefox, Safari and Microsoft Edge are recommended (most recent versions will work)

You can learn more about PlayStation Vue supported devices here.

PlayStation Vue Simultaneous Streams

The ability to stream on 5 devices at once is the primary factor that makes PlayStation Vue a good alternative to fuboTV. As fuboTV only offers 2 device streams per account (or 3 if you pay extra), PlayStation Vue’s streaming policy makes it better for account sharing.

To learn more about PlayStation Vue’s streaming policy, check here.

PlayStation Vue DVR

You can record an unlimited amount through PlayStation Vue’s DVR, with a catch: all videos expire after 28 days. If you don’t need long-term storage, this makes PlayStation Vue’s DVR a good option, although it’s notably limited compared to fuboTV’s 30-hour DVR storage with no time limits.

Learn more about PlayStation Vue’s DVR option here.

PlayStation Vue On-Demand Library

Neither PlayStation Vue nor fuboTV advertise how much content they have in their on-demand libraries. However, PlayStation Vue likely has a smaller, but still substantial, cloud DVR. You can still watch thousands of hours of TV shows and movies through PlayStation Vue’s on-demand library, with many new and popular shows readily available for streaming.

Sling TV: Cheapest FuboTV Alternative For Multiple Channels

sling tv fubotv alternatives 2019
Source: Sling TV

Sling TV is the lowest-cost fuboTV alternative for those who are still looking for a multi-channel live TV streaming package. You won’t get as many sports channels through its primary package options, but you can mix and match add-on channel packages if you’re willing to pay the added cost, while still paying less than fuboTV.

Sling TV Pricing and Packages

Sling TV offers 2 primary channel packages: Sling Orange ($25 per month) and Sling Blue (also $25 per month).

Free Roku Express

* You get 1 stream for Sling Orange channels and up to 3 simultaneous streams for Sling Blue channels.

Both come with an assortment of sports channels without any add-ons, although Sling Orange provides ESPN and a few others, while Sling Blue offers FOX Sports and a few others.

Sling TV Channels

Your channel package will determine which channels (and sports networks), you’ll get. Sling Orange offers ESPN as the primary network but doesn’t carry FOX Sports, while Sling Blue provides FOX Sports, but not ESPN. You can combine both packages under the Sling Orange + Blue pack for $40 per month, or you can choose just one of the two primary packages and tack on a sports channel add-on.

An “International Sports Package” is available for Sling TV subscribers. For $10 a month, you’ll get 10 channels including beIN Sports, BeIN Sports Espanol, and One World Sports. With this package, you can watch soccer leagues like the Copa Americana, and get coverage of major soccer clubs like Chelsea, Bayern Munich, Arsenal, and more.

You can learn more about Sling TV’s channels here.

Sling TV Supported Devices

Although Sling TV and fuboTV have been in the market for about the same number of years, Sling TV’s app library is far more extensive. You can stream on almost any device you might own or want, including smart TVs and the Xbox One console.

The full list of supported devices includes:

  • TV streaming media players: Apple TV (4th gen and up), Amazon Fire TV (all versions), Chromecast, Roku (LT and up), AirTV,
  • Smart TVs: LG TV (Web OS 3.0, 3.5, and 4.0, as well as select 2016-2018 models), Samsung TV (2016 through 2018 models), Android TV (4.4 and up), Roku TV, Mi TV,
  • Mobile devices and tablets: Android (4.4 and up),  iOS (11 and up), Amazon Fire (tablets)
  • Game consoles: Xbox One
  • Desktop browsers: Chrome on Mac and Windows recommended

You can learn more about Sling TV’s streaming policy here.

Sling TV Simultaneous Streams

Simultaneous streaming is an area where Sling TV is weak, or strong, depending on the package you choose. You can stream on just 1 device at a time through Sling Orange, but on 3 devices (more than fuboTV without paying extra), through Sling Blue. Unfortunately, even if you opt for Sling Orange + Blue, the Sling Orange exclusive channels stay at just 1 stream per account.

To learn more about Sling TV’s simultaneous streaming policy, check here.

Sling TV DVR

Unfortunately, fuboTV has the edge up on Sling TV when it comes to DVR. Sling TV’s 50-hour DVR costs $5 per month as an extra add-on. You can still tack on the DVR with a sports channel addons for an overall lower cost than fuboTV’s introductory package, but you’re still paying extra for a feature other services automatically include with the subscription.

To learn more about Sling TV’s DVR, check here.

Sling TV On-Demand Library

Sling TV’s on-demand library won’t be as large as you’d find with fuboTV. However, Sling TV still provides over 10,000 hours of on-demand content, including new TV show episodes, movies, and recent sporting events.

Hulu With Live TV: Best FuboTV Alternative for On-Demand Features

pasted image 0 43
Source: Hulu

Although the only sports channel you can get from Hulu With Live TV not available on FuboTV is ESPN, Hulu’s expansive on-demand library may make it a better option for those who want additional non-sports-related streaming options. Alongside that, Hulu With Live TV offers some improvements over other areas where fuboTV is weak.

Hulu With Live TV Pricing and Packages

At present, Hulu With Live TV provides one streaming package of channels for $44.99.

Hulu + Live TV
7-Day Free Trial
$44.99/ month

67 Channels

2 simultaneous streams

ESPN and Disney

At that price, you’ll get 60+ channels, including major sports channels, news, entertainment, locals, and Hulu’s massive on-demand library.

You can learn more about Hulu’s packages here.

Hulu With Live TV Channels

Hulu With Live TV is great for sports fans, particularly soccer fans. It includes NBCSN, which covers major Premier League soccer matches in England. It also has CBS Sports Network, The Big 10 Network, ESPN, ESPN2, and ESPNEWS, as well as Fox Sports 1 and Fox Sports 2. Hulu With Live TV lacks the soccer channel beIN TV, though.

To learn more about Hulu’s live TV channels, check here.

Hulu With Live TV Supported Devices

You can use Hulu With Live TV on a large number of devices, including iOS/Android devices, Roku, Amazon Fire TV, Apple TV, Chromecast, and Xbox 360/One. PlayStation support is absent for Hulu With Live TV, though it’s expected to become available in the future.

The full list of supported devices includes:

  • TV streaming media players: Apple TV (4th gen and up), Amazon Fire TV and TV Stick, Chromecast and Roku (most models)
  • Smart TVs: LG TV (select models), Samsung TV (select models), Android TV and Roku TV
  • Mobile devices and tablets: Android (5.0 and up),  iOS (11 and up), Amazon Fire (tablets)
  • Game consoles: Nintendo Switch, Xbox One and Xbox 360
  • Desktop browsers: Most Mac and PC browsers
  • Smart home devices: Amazon Echo Show (video and voice controls)
  • Desktop operating systems: Windows 10 (dedicated app)

To learn more about Hulu’s supported devices, click here.

Hulu With Live TV Simultaneous Streams

There’s little difference between Hulu and fuboTV in streaming policy, with one major exception. FuboTV offers a third device stream for $5.99, while Hulu charges $9.99 to get the third stream. However, Hulu’s add-on package lets you stream on three devices anywhere in the US, ignoring the normal location restrictions, and lets you stream on an unlimited number of devices while connected to your home WiFi network.

To learn more about Hulu’s Live TV streaming policy, check here.

Hulu With Live TV DVR

You can get a 50-hour cloud DVR from Hulu, which beats fuboTV’s 30-hour cloud DVR. However, both services charge $9.99 extra for increased storage, with fuboTV providing a larger amount of storage with the upgrade (500 hours, versus 200 through Hulu).

You can learn more about Hulu Live TV’s DVR here.

Hulu With Live TV On-Demand Library

There is no other live TV service on the market (as of this time of writing) that has as large an on-demand library as Hulu Live TV. You’ll get 85,000 titles, to include movies and TV show episodes, thanks to Hulu including its original on-demand service as part of the Live TV service. You’ll also get the on-demand content from the live TV channels, as well, which includes sports networks.

YouTube TV provides a rather wide selection of channels for the price, but it has a heavy emphasis on sports and local broadcast networks.

ESPN+: Best FuboTV Alternative for Cheap ESPN Content

espn plus fubotv alternatives 2019
Source: ESPN+

Although ESPN+ won’t get you access to the mainline ESPN content, it offers a wide selection of hard-to-find sports streams, like UFC (which you can’t get from fuboTV). As such, it may be a good fuboTV alternative if you’re only looking for some key sports, or you could sign up to it alongside fuboTV to extend your sports streaming options.

ESPN+ Pricing and Packages

ESPN+ is just $4.99 per month. At that price, you’ll get a wide selection of sports streams, including some you won’t find on any fuboTV channel.

ESPN+ Supported Devices

Despite being a niche service, ESPN+ has very wide device support, including availability on several gaming consoles, every major TV-connected device, Android, and iOS.

DAZN is the single best option for fight sports in the US. But that’s not what makes it a good fuboTV alternative. If you live in or are traveling to Canada, Japan, Brazil, or a few European countries, DAZN has the most complete sports package you’ll find anywhere in the world, at a much lower price than fuboTV offers.

Outside the US, you can get almost every sport you can think of, including NFL football, MLB, soccer, golf, hockey, Formula 1, and much more.

Fox Soccer Match Pass

fox soccer match pass fubotv alternatives 2019
Source: Fox Soccer Match Pass

When it comes to soccer, Fox Soccer Match Pass is unbeatable.

There is no other streaming service that provides the same diversity of soccer programming and coverage for such a low price. It’s definitely our top recommendation if you only want to watch soccer.

Fox Soccer Match Pass costs $140 a year. However, the price is not so steep when compared to fuboTV. fuboTV costs $20/month for 2 months, then $40 – bringing its annual cost to $440.

Fox Soccer Match Pass provides live and on-demand streaming soccer matches and content from 30+ international competitions. This includes the UEFA European League, the Champions League, Bundesliga, the FA Cup, the Copa Americana, CONCACAF, FIFA, and the MLS – among others.

Replays of live matches are available alongside live streams, and supplemental content like talk shows and panel programs are also included.

The Fox Soccer Match Pass supports streaming on all web browsers, on Android/iOS phones and tablets, and on your TV with Apple TV, Roku, and Chromecast. However, gaming console support is notably absent.

The Biggest Issues With fuboTV

fuboTV starts at $54.99 per month and for the money, you do get quite a few features. You get a DVR, 90+ channels and coverage of soccer matches in the Premier League, as well as a variety of other top leagues around the world. It even includes non-sports channels like E!, Fox, and FXX.

However, fuboTV has some flaws that prevent it from being that “Goldilocks” streaming solution. Here are our primary issues with this service.

Lacks some major sports networks

pasted image 0 46
Source: ESPN

Despite the fact that fuboTV is oriented towards sports fans, the company has still been unable to strike a deal with Disney – so you won’t get ESPN channels or ABC Sports. If you’re only watching soccer, this isn’t a huge deal. However, if you’re looking to keep up with the “big four” MLB, NHL, NBA, or NFL, this lack of coverage is likely to be an issue.

Available local sports coverage is inconsistent, hard to understand

pasted image 0 44
Source: fuboTV

Understanding what local sports coverage is available is difficult, as we pointed out in our full review of fuboTV. The above screenshot comes from this chart, which shows what game coverage might be available in your area.

As you can see, you’re almost never guaranteed coverage – which is a big issue if you can’t get your local CBS, FOX, or NBC station. Regional restrictions, blackouts, and other “fine print” can further restrict your access to sports coverage

Limited access to local channels

Not all local network affiliates have signed contracts with fuboTV, even though FOX, NBC, and CBS have signed deals. If your particular local affiliate is not part of the service, you can’t watch it on fuboTV.

Of course, you can use an OTA digital antenna to watch local broadcasts. However, this makes things more complicated and eliminates your ability to watch live content on-the-go.

No apps for major gaming platforms

fuboTV still lacks an app for Xbox and PlayStation consoles. While you can use Microsoft Edge on your Xbox or the PlayStation Web Browser to access online fuboTV streams, the experience is quite clunky. If you prefer to use your gaming console as a media hub, fuboTV is not a good choice.

Inconsistent app performance and experience

pasted image 0 39
Source: fuboTV

Live sports are available on every fuboTV app, but if you are also going to be watching entertainment channels or on-demand streaming shows, you’re going to have an inconsistent experience.

It’s difficult to browse on-demand programming and live streams from the iOS app, for example, and you can’t use fuboTV’s DVR functionality on your Roku or Apple TV.

If you’re primarily streaming fuboTV through the web, it’s probably a good choice for you. The inconsistent app experience makes it harder to recommend if you prefer viewing on your TV or mobile devices.
