Watching BBC Without Cable – Understanding “Skinny Bundle” Internet TV

In the past, you weren’t able to watch BBC America or any other channel without a subscription to a cable or satellite pay TV service, like DirecTV. But today, cord-cutting has forced TV networks to provide an alternative to cable service: “skinny bundle” internet TV.

Internet TV services deliver packages of pre-selected channels for a low monthly fee. You don’t have to pay for cable activation or setup fees, or worry about cancellation fees or any other costs. All major “skinny bundle” internet TV providers bill monthly, without any other extra costs.

Looking to learn how to watch BBC America without cable? Here are your top 6 internet TV options!

Philo is a unique internet TV service. Unlike some competitors, it does not offer any local news channels or sports coverage. This allows Philo to provide a ton of great entertainment channels at a really low price.

Philo offers two simple plans—a $16/month plan with 40 channels, and a $20/month plan that adds 9 additional channels, bringing the total to 49. BBC America is included in both the $16/month and $20/month plan.

While you won’t find any sports channels or local news coverage on Philo, you will get a ton of great entertainment and lifestyle channels like DIY Network, Comedy Central, BET, and more.

Features

Philo has a great set of features, despite being the lowest-cost choice for watching BBC America on our list. You get a cloud DVR with your subscription, which allows you to save unlimited episodes for up to 30 days, after which they are deleted.

You can also stream on up to 3 devices at once, which ties Philo with Sling Blue and YouTube TV, despite its lower cost.

The main drawback of Philo is that few devices are supported at the moment. You can only watch on your web browser, on Roku, and on iOS. You can watch Philo via your Chrome web browser on Android, but this drains battery quickly and is far from an ideal option.

Still, Philo offers a great number of channels at a low price. You can even get started with a free 7-day trial, without even entering your credit card information.

There are two primary English-language packages available on fuboTV, both of which include BBC America. The fubo package costs $45/month, and you’ll get around 75 channels for this price, including plenty of sports channels.

The new fubo Extra package includes every channel in the fubo package, as well as some extras like Cooking Channel, DIY Network, and BBC World News, bringing the total channels to 90+, depending on your location.

Features

fuboTV comes with a totally free cloud-based DVR, though you’re limited to only 30 hours of storage per month. If you need more than that, you’ll have to pay a $10/month fee, which gets you 500 hours of storage space.

You can also only stream on 2 devices at once with fuboTV. If you need to stream on an additional device, you’ll need to pay $6/month for a “Family Share” add-on, which bumps you up to 3 simultaneous streams.

fuboTV also has really good device support. You can watch on your laptop, on iOS and Android phones, and on Amazon Fire TV, Roku, Apple TV, and Chromecast.

Sling TV

Sling TV is the oldest internet TV “skinny bundle”. It launched in early 2015, and its low cost and “ a la carte” cable channel model quickly attracted cord-cutters. Here is what you need to know about the service.

Sling TV offers two primary plans for cord-cutters. You can get the Sling Orange plan, which contains about 30 channels, for $20/month. Alternatively, you can pay $25/month for Sling Blue, which has about 45 channels. You can combine both packages for $40/month.

Sling Orange and Sling Blue both have some exclusive channels. For example, you can only get ESPN on Sling Orange, and Fox Sports on Sling Blue. However, both packages offer BBC America, so you’ll be able to watch British TV no matter which one you choose.

Features

The features you get depend on the package you choose. Regardless of whether you chose Sling Blue or Orange, though, you have to pay $5/extra per month for a cloud DVR, which will get you 50 hours of storage.

Sling Orange lets you stream on only 1 device at a time, while Sling Blue allows for streaming on up to 3 devices at once. Note that this restriction is still in place if you have Sling Blue + Orange—you can still only stream Sling Blue channels on 3 devices, and Sling Orange channels like ESPN on a single device.

Sling TV has pretty good device support. You can watch on iOS and Android, as well as your web browser when you’re on the go. At home, you can stream on all major living room platforms, like the Apple TV, Chromecast, Amazon Fire TV, and Roku. Sling TV also supports Xbox One, and some Samsung and LG Smart TVs.

If you want to try it out for yourself, you can get a free 7-day trial now at the Sling TV website.

DirecTV Now

DirecTV Now was created by AT&T and DirecTV specifically to reclaim cord-cutters who canceled their cable and satellite subscriptions. It offers a good number of channels for a reasonable price, but is somewhat lacking when it comes to features.

DirecTV Now offers four different channel packages, ranging from the $35/month “Live A Little” package to the 120+ channel, $70/month “Gotta Have It” package which includes premium networks like HBO and Showtime.

BBC America is available in all four of these packages, so it’s up to you how much money you spend, and how many channels you need.

Features

DirecTV Now had no DVR service available until early May of this year. DirecTV Now subscribers get a free 20 hour DVR, making this the most limited DVR on our list.

You can also only stream on 2 devices at once. DirecTV Now is going to add an option to pay for a third stream, but they haven’t announced when this feature will go live.

Platform support for DirecTV Now is really good, though. The apps for iOS and Android work well, and you can also watch on your web browser. All major platforms like Roku, Chromecast, Amazon Fire TV, and Apple TV are also supported.

If you want to try this service out for yourself, you can give it a shot with a free 7-day trial.

PlayStation Vue

PlayStation Vue has had a tough time attracting cord-cutters, probably because of its name. (You don’t need a PlayStation to use it.) Despite this, the service provides great features and a reasonable lineup of channels for a good price.

Plans and channels

You have four different channel package options with PlayStation Vue, similar to DirecTV Now.

  • Access – 45 channels, $40/month
  • Core – 60 channels, $45/month
  • Elite – 84 channels,  $55/month
  • Ultra – All Elite channels plus HBO/Showtime, $75/month

Like DirecTV Now, BBC America is available in all of these different packages, so you don’t have to break the bank in order to watch your favorite British TV shows.

Features

PlayStation Vue has some standout features that make it great for families, or larger households that plan to share an internet TV subscription.

First, you get a 28-day unlimited DVR. As long as you record less than 500 different individual shows, you can record as much content as you want for 28 days, so you never have to worry about running out of space.

You can also watch on up to 5 devices at once, depending on which ones you’re using. This is better than any other internet TV service out there. You’ll pretty much never have to worry about streaming on too many devices at once.

PlayStation Vue also has great device support. Naturally, you can watch it on the PlayStation 3 or 4 consoles, but you can also watch it on iOS and Android, as well as online in your web browser. You also can stream on Amazon Fire TV, Chromecast, Roku, and Apple TV.

Interested? Vue offers a 5-day trial on their website, so you can get started now.

YouTube TV

YouTube TV by Google is one of the more recent additions to the internet TV landscape. With a single low-cost package, good features and a solid channel lineup—as well as an extensive marketing push—it’s quickly becoming quite popular with cord-cutters.

Plans and channels

YouTube TV offers only a single channel package. For $40/month, you get a total of around 70 channels, though this will vary based on your geographic location. This includes BBC America, as well as plenty of other top channels like ESPN, NBC News, BBC News and dozens more. You get quite a bit for your money.

Features

YouTube TV has outstanding features, particularly when it comes to account sharing. First, a 9-month unlimited cloud DVR is included. You can record as much content as you want for up to 9 months, with no limitations. You also get 6 individual user accounts, so each person can fill their own DVR.

You also get 3 simultaneous streams included with your subscription. While this is less than a service like PlayStation Vue, it’s plenty for most families and households.

The service also has great device support. You can watch on Android and iOS when you’re on the go, as well as the Chrome browser. You also can watch on Chromecast, Roku, and Apple TV, as well as some Samsung and LG Smart TVs. The only noticeable exception is lack of Amazon Fire TV support, which is due to the silly Google/Amazon corporate feud.

Interested? You can get a free trial of YouTube TV now on their website.

BBC America Website and Apps

pasted image 0 34

In many ways, internet TV services are just like their cable and satellite pay TV counterparts. This includes support for logging into the website and apps of cable networks to watch content both live and on-demand.

If you have a login for YouTube TV, PlayStation Vue, Philo, or PlayStation Vue, you can use it to log into BBC America, just like you would use a traditional cable or satellite subscription. Choose your provider from the list and enter your credentials, and you’re good to go.

Curiously, Sling TV and fuboTV are not yet listed as supported by BBC America. It remains to be seen if this changes in the future.

Why bother downloading the BBC America app or using the BBC America website to watch content? Because it doesn’t count towards simultaneous streams.

For example, if you have Philo, you could sign into BBC America while two of your family members are using the Philo app, and you could still watch your favorite shows, despite the two simultaneous stream restriction.
