Philo is a newer entrant into the world of internet TV and was only released in late 2017. However, it has quickly become an ideal choice for cord-cutters who are seeking a low-cost service that does not focus on sports or live events.
Philo has two subscription plans available. For $16/month, you can get the basic Philo subscription plan, which includes 45+ channnels. You can also choose a $20/month plan, which will give you a total of 58+ channels. Get more details here.

With the basic, $16/month Philo plan, you’ll get AXS TV, as well as other top entertainment and lifestyle channels such as Comedy Central, MTV and MTV2, The Travel Channel, and IFC.
You can also opt for the slightly more expensive $20/month package, which includes all of the $16/month channels plus a few others.
- The American Heroes Channel
- BET Her
- Cooking Channel
- Destination America
- Discovery Family
- Discovery Life
- MTV Live
However, Philo is cheap for a reason – you can’t watch any live sports coverage or local channels. By eschewing these expensive cable channels, Philo gives you a great price.

Device support for Philo used to be pretty bad. However, it has improved quite a bit in recent months. Today, you can stream Philo on iOS, Roku, Amazon Fire TV, and Apple TV.
However, Android users don’t even get an app – if you have an Android, you’ll have to stream Philo using the Chrome web browser on your device, which is obviously not ideal. Still, device support is pretty good for Philo. You can get a full device support breakdown here.
You can stream on up to 3 devices at once, which puts Philo on-par with Sling Blue for a lower overall price. With Philo, it’s easy to share your account with family members or housemates.
Even though Philo is very inexpensive, it has a great set of features. You get a free DVR with your subscription, allowing you to save unlimited episodes of your favorite shows for up to 30 days. After 30 days, your recordings expire and are deleted.
This makes Philo better than both DirecTV Now (which doesn’t have a DVR) and Sling TV (Which costs $5/month for DVR service) when it comes to recording your favorite shows.
Philo also now allows you to have two user profiles. That includes two different DVR settings and other individual user settings, including separate profile pictures. You can learn more here.
Philo On-Demand Library
Philo has a total of more than 20,000 titles which you can watch on-demand, including most recent episodes of main TV shows, and a reasonably good selection of older episodes and movies.

Sling TV is the oldest internet TV “skinny bundle” out there, and it has over 2.2 million subscribers. While its subscription plan is a bit confusing, it does offer a reasonable set of features and channels for a decent price.
Sling TV only offers two basic plans: Sling Orange and Sling Blue.
Sling Orange comes with some exclusive channels such as ESPN and other Disney-owned networks. It costs $25/month and you get a total of about 25+ channels, but this can vary based on where you are in the country.
Sling Blue comes with some channels excluded from Orange, such as Fox Sports and SyFy. It costs $25/month for a total of 40+ channels.
You can also combine both Sling Orange + Blue to get about 50 total channels. There is a lot of channel overlap, so you will be paying for some channels twice when you choose to get Sling Orange + Blue, which costs $40/month. Learn more here.

Both Sling Blue and Sling Orange come with AXS TV, so you can choose which package is right for you.
Sling TV also lets you customize your subscription with additional “extra” packages. For example, if you get Sling Blue and want more comedy channels, you could purchase the “Comedy Extra” package for $5/month, and get channels like MTV, TruTV, MTV2, and Logo.
There are quite a few different extras, so Sling TV is popular with cord-cutters who want to customize what networks they get. Get a full breakdown here.
One of the best features of Sling TV is its great platform support. As the oldest internet TV company, they have developed apps for most major streaming platforms, such as:
- Web browsers
- iOS phones and tablets
- Android phones and tablets
- Apple TV
- Amazon Fire TV
- Apple TV
- Xbox One
- LG and Samsung Smart TVs
You will be a bit limited when it comes to streaming simultaneously with Sling Orange. You can only stream Sling Orange channels on 1 device at a time, so it’s basically impossible to share your subscription.
If you need more simultaneous streams, you can pay $25/month for Sling Blue, which lets you stream on 3 devices at once. If you have a family or plan on sharing login information with housemates, this is definitely a better choice.
To get a DVR with Sling TV, you have to pay an additional $5/month fee. That means you’ll be paying $30/month total for Sling Blue, or $25/month for Sling Orange. This isn’t too bad, but it would be nice if the DVR was included in the price of your subscription.
The DVR comes with 50 total hours of storage, and it can’t be used to record some channels – such as ESPN and other Disney-owned channels – due to licensing agreements. You can learn more here.
Sling TV On-Demand Library
Sling TV has a reasonably good selection of on-demand content. While most shows offer only a few of the latest episodes, there are also plenty of on-demand movies and past seasons of top shows available, and it’s easy to browse all of your on-demand options with Sling.
DirecTV Now provides both live TV streaming and a lot of on-demand content. As it’s run by AT&T, it has the best channel selection out of any internet TV provider. However, it’s extremely expensive compared to the other picks on our list
Recently, DirecTV Now completely changed their channel packages. Now, you can choose from a total of 7 different packages.
- Plus: 40+ channels / $50 per month. Includes HBO
- Max: 50+ channels / $70 per month. Includes HBO, Cinemax
- Entertainment: 65+ channels / $93 per month
- Choice: 85+ channels / $110 per month
- Xtra: 105+ channels / $124 per month
- Ultimate: 125+ channels / $135 per month
To watch AXS TV without cable on DirecTV Now, you’ll need to get the $93/month Entertainment plan or a higher plan, making this the most expensive option, by far. Learn more here.
Watching AXS TV without cable using DirecTV Now may be expensive, but the service does offer a number of top cable and network channels like CNN, HGTV, Fox News, A&E, BET, and more than 60 others. You can see the full breakdown of what channels come in each package here.
DirecTV Now has great platform support, and DirecTV apps work well across almost all supported devices. You can watch on-the-go on your laptop or your iOS and Android tablets. At home, you can use streaming platforms like the Roku, Amazon Fire devices, Apple TV, and the Google Chromecast to watch DirecTV Now on your TV. Learn more here.
DirecTV Now also only lets you stream on 2 devices at once, which is pretty low compared to some other services like PlayStation Vue and Sling TV Blue. However, you can add a third stream for a $5/month fee. Learn more here.
DirecTV Now includes a 20-hour cloud DVR service. That DVR service is extremely limited compared to other services. You’ll also only get to keep your recordings for 30 days, which is an oddly restrictive limitation given the comparatively small DVR storage already provided. Still, the DVR allows you to fast forward, rewind, and skip commercials. Learn more here.
DirecTV Now On-Demand Library
DirecTV Now has a very large library, consisting of more than 40,000 pieces of on-demand content. If you tend to watch a lot of video on-demand content, this may make DirecTV Now a better choice for you.

AXS TV does have a few videos on YouTube, which you can watch for free if you are not interested in subscribing to any kind of streaming service. However, the content that is available on the YouTube page is quite limited.
Primarily, AXS TV on YouTube provides very short clips and overviews of their shows and upcoming programming. For example, you can view short stand-up clips or excerpts of interviews with musicians such as Billy Ray Cyrus, Eddie Money, and Sammy Hagar.
You can also watch excerpts from shows like Gotham Comedy and The X Factor UK.
AXS TV has a few other YouTube Channels. On AXS TV Fights, you can watch MMA highlights and previews, as well as some exclusive web content. And on AXS TV Concerts, you can watch songs from some of the latest concerts hosted on this cable channel.
Overall, there is quite a bit of content and it’s all free. You’re not going to be able to watch full episodes of AXS TV shows, but there’s plenty to keep you entertained, and you don’t have to pay a dime.
The AXS TV Website – Pay Per Video
If you want, you can purchase individual videos of AXS TV content directly from their website. This is a good alternative to subscribing to a streaming service, and a good way to catch up on past episodes of your shows if you forgot to record them on your DVR. Shows available include:
- The Big Interview
- AXS TV Fights
- Breaking Band
- Dan Rather Presents
- Discovering Lucy Angel
- Drinking Made Easy
- Gotham Comedy Live
- Matchbox Twenty Live North
- Rock and Roll Road Trip With Sammy Hagar
- Smart Travels Europe
- Smart Travels Pacific Rim
- Tom Green Live
- The Voice Versus
Most show episodes cost between $2-$4, though some live events like MMA fights can cost up to $10+ per episode. If you only buy a few episodes, this is reasonable, but the costs can mount up quickly if you buy full seasons of your favorite shows.
After you purchase the episodes, you can stream them directly in your web browser, which makes the process quite convenient.
