First up is fuboTV, one of the most unique streaming services on the market today. Most cable TV alternatives are run by large corporations. fuboTV is different because it’s a startup.

fuboTV Pricing and Packages

fuboTV’s core subscription costs $55 and comes with CBS Sports Network and 90+ other channels. Half of those channels broadcasts live sports and many are not carried by traditional cable TV providers.

fuboTV Channels

As mentioned in the intro, roughly half of the channels you get with fuboTV are sports channels. fuboTV has two sports channels that broadcast some events in 4K: NBCSN and FS1. Hopefully, fuboTV will eventually add more 4K support to the other channels that it carries.

You can see a full channel list here.

fuboTV Supported Devices

Do you have an Amazon Fire TV, Chromecast or Roku device? If the answer was yes, you can watch fuboTV content through fuboTV apps as well as on your computer. Many other popular TV devices are supported, as well. The only TV device category that fuboTV doesn’t have apps for is game consoles.

You can learn more about fuboTV’s supported devices here.

fuboTV Simultaneous Streams

Unless you plan on sharing your account with more than three people and those three people often watch TV in different rooms, fuboTV’s account sharing policy should accommodate your needs. The base simultaneous streaming limit is two devices but there’s a paid upgrade that unlocks a third simultaneous stream.

You can learn more about fuboTV simultaneous streams here.

fuboTV DVR

One of the best things about streaming services is that most of them come with some type of cloud DVR. fuboTV’s most basic DVR is free and can hold 30 hours of recording time. If you need more hours, get the DVR upgrade. It doesn’t cost much and it expands your recording capacity to 500 hours.

You can learn more about the fuboTV DVR here.

fuboTV On-Demand Library

fuboTV doesn’t specialize in hosting on-demand shows and movies. However, a significant amount of on-demand content is available through this streaming service. A feature called 72-hour Rewind lets you catch up with recently aired TV shows.

The brand name PlayStation Vue is a little misleading. What at first glance seems to be some type of gaming service is actually one of the very best streaming services on the market.

PlayStation Vue Pricing and Packages

The most economical PlayStation Vue plan costs $45/month, but it doesn’t have CBS Sports. To get CBS Sports, you need to buy the $50 Core subscription plan. The $80 Ultra plan includes all the regular channels that PlayStation Vue broadcast and several premium channels.

PlayStation Vue Channels

In addition to CBS Sports, other sports channels that you can get through PlayStation Vue include ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNEWS, FS1, FS2… and that’s just for starters. Various add-ons give you the ability to get NFL RedZone, FOX College Sports and more.

PlayStation Vue Supported Devices

PlayStation Vue’s device support is quite extensive:

  • TV streaming media players: Apple TV (4th gen and up), Android TV (all gens), Amazon Fire TV and Fire TV Stick (all gens), Chromecast (1st gen and up) and Roku (firmware 8.0 and up).
  • Smart TVs: Amazon Fire TV (all gens), Android TV (all gens) and Roku (firmware 8.0 and up).
  • Mobile devices and tablets: Android OS 5.0 and up, iOS 9 and up, and Amazon Fire HD6 tablets and up.
  • Game consoles: PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4.
  • Desktop browsers: Chrome, Firefox, Safari and Microsoft Edge are recommended (most recent versions will work).

PlayStation Vue Simultaneous Streams

You get five simultaneous streams with PlayStation Vue. That’s right: five. Very few other streaming services have an account sharing policy that’s that flexible.

Click here to learn more about PlayStation Vue’s account sharing features.

PlayStation Vue DVR

Another outstanding feature of PlayStation Vue is its unlimited DVR. Most competing streaming services will limit you to a finite number of hours when you record TV. PlayStation Vue does not.

PlayStation Vue On-Demand Library

Like many cable replacement services that specialize in live TV, PlayStation Vue’s on-demand catalog is served up as a side dish. Even though on-demand is not the main course, there are a few movies you can stream through PlayStation Vue when there’s nothing good on. Some recently aired TV show episodes are available as well.

Hulu with Live TV Simultaneous Streams

If Hulu with Live TV has a downside, it’s the fact that you have to pay more to maximize its features. The Unlimited Streams upgrade lets you stream to an unlimited number of screens as long as you use Hulu with Live TV on your home network. Without that $10/month upgrade, you’re limited to two screens at a time.

Hulu with Live TV DVR

All subscribers get a DVR, but you can’t fast forward unless you upgrade it.

Hulu with Live TV On-Demand Library

On-demand content is one of Hulu’s specialties. Many shows get posted to Hulu’s on-demand library almost immediately after they air live.

CBS All Access vs. fuboTV: Which is Better?

fuboTV and CBS All Access are two completely different types of TV replacement services. CBS All Access is not a full-featured solution for cutting the cord, like fuboTV. It’s designed to fill in the gaps and meet certain niche needs. It lacks a cloud DVR and it only gives you access to CBS content.

On the other hand, CBS All Access is much cheaper compared to fuboTV. The basic fuboTV subscription package costs $45/month. That’s inexpensive compared to the packages that traditional cable companies offer, but several times pricier than CBS All Access. If you’re on a budget or if gaining access to CBS Sports is your main priority, then it makes sense to get CBS All Access subscription instead of fuboTV.

How to Watch CBS for Free

If you want to watch CBS on a device, you have to install the CBS app and then subscribe to gain access. If you just want to watch CBS content on a web browser, however, you can do so for free through the CBS News website or via Pluto TV.

CBS on the web

To watch CBS on the CBS News website, just go to cbsnews.com and then select Live from the menu on the top of the screen. This will take you to a free live feed of CBSN, which you can access by pressing the play button. The gear icon on the bottom right side of the embedded video gives you the option to toggle or configure closed captions.

Pluto TV

Pluto TV is a totally free live TV service that gives you access to a wide range of TV content. CBSN, NBC News, CNBC, Sky News are just a few of the 13 news channels that are available on Pluto TV. You don’t even have to create an account to watch. All you have to do is open the Pluto TV website and click whatever channel you want to view.

Pluto TV has an app for just about every TV device under the sun, including Roku, Amazon Fire TV, Apple TV, Chromecast, Android, iPhone, Android TV, Samsung, Vizio TV and Sony smart TVs.

Final Thoughts

There are now so many options for watching TV on the internet that it can be hard to decide which service to choose. If you don’t have much money to spend, Pluto TV is probably the best way to watch CBS. It’s a free live TV service that has apps for nearly every type of TV device. The main downside of Pluto TV is that it makes money by showing its users ads. Those ads can get annoying, particularly if you plan on tuning into CBS every day.

If you’re a Star Trek fan and/or hate ads, you may want to check out CBS All Access. A subscription to CBS All Access is the only way to watch Star Trek: Discovery. On-demand episodes of other popular CBS shows is a nice perk, as well.

fuboTV is the best solution for those who are thinking about cutting the cord but haven’t yet made the move. A subscription to fuboTV will let you keep all the main cable channels you’re used to watching, and several excellent sports channels that you won’t find anywhere else.
