If you like PeopleTV content, chances are high that you’ll enjoy what Philo brings to the table. This unique streaming service is one of the cheapest options available for getting lifestyle and special interest channels without a cable TV subscription. BET, Cooking Channel, Travel, Nickelodeon and Science are just a few of the most popular cable channels that you can get through Philo.
Unlike most streaming services, Philo only has a single subscription plan. You can get access to all 63 channels that Philo carries for just $20/month. The simplicity of the one-size-fits-all plan is appealing on one level, but it could also be a disadvantage for people that want to watch sports. On the other hand, there are no gimmicks, upsells or channel add-on packs to tempt you into spending extra money. That makes Philo ideal for people that want to give up cable and save as much money as they can.

As mentioned earlier, Philo’s base plan comes with 63 channels. PeopleTV is just one of the channels you’ll get. There are entertainment channels like A&E, lifestyle channels like Food Network and documentary channels like History Channel and Viceland. You can also catch up with the news by watching BBC America or Cheddar. That’s just scratching the surface of what’s available, all for just $20/month.
On the other hand, there are some notable holes in Philo’s channel menu that are worth mentioning here. The biggest gap is the fact that Philo doesn’t carry any sports channels. The reason behind Philo’s decision to skip sports probably boils down to cost. Sports leagues charge big money for the rights to stream the most popular events. According to Variety, ESPN pays $1.9 billion for the right to broadcast the NFL’s Monday Night Football. Since Philo’s subscription fee is so low, it’s probably impossible for the company to find a way to foot the bill.

Philo has apps for iPhone, Android, Chromecast, Roku and many other popular TV device platforms. Up until very recently, the Android mobile app lacked a key feature: you couldn’t play any live streams. However, the latest version of Philo for Android does have all the features you’d expect it to have– except a Chromecast button. You have to open Philo on your computer if you want to use it with Chromecast.
- TV streaming media players: Apple TV (4th gen and up), Amazon Fire TV (all models), Chromecast and Roku (all current models).
- Smart TVs: Android TV (5.0 and up).
- Mobile devices and tablets: Android (7.0 and up, Chrome browser), iOS (10.3 and up).
- Game consoles: None.
- Desktop browsers: Most Mac and PC browsers.
Check here for more information on Philo’s supported devices.
Like many streaming services, Philo lets you stream to up to three different screens at the same time through a single account. In other words, the simultaneous stream limit is three devices. This flexibility is ideal for people that want to share their streaming account with a few other friends or family members.

Given Philo’s low cost, you may expect it to have lots of recording restrictions. Fortunately, that’s not the case at all. In fact, you can record as much TV as you want. All recordings remain saved for 30 days, after which they disappear. There are no paid upgrades that extend the amount of time that you can save content.

Though Philo does have some on-demand content, most of it is recently aired TV show episodes. Don’t expect the same range of content that you get with a dedicated on-demand service like Hulu or Netflix. On the other hand, Philo’s partnerships with SundanceTV and AMC allow it to offer a small selection of movies.
One potential downside that’s worth mentioning here is the fact that you do have to sit through the occasional commercial when you watch on-demand videos through this service. There’s no way around watching the ads, either. Other services offer paid upgrades that block out the adverts.

Originally a niche streaming service for fans of sports that are more popular outside the US, fuboTV has recently pivoted to expand into the realm of general TV entertainment. The addition of PeopleTV last year was yet another step in this direction. Even though half of the channels you get when you subscribe to fuboTV’s base plan are sports channels, the startup now offers all kinds of other entertainment options, as well. Another nice perk: if you have an Apple TV, you can use fuboTV’s new picture-in-picture mode to keep an eye on several channels at once. It’s a great feature for not only sports fans, but also anyone who gets impatient during commercial breaks.
Philo and fuboTV have a lot in common when it comes to subscription plans. Both streaming services prefer to keep things simple. Prices are competitive compared to other streamers. The cheapest plan comes with more than 90 channels. Half of those channels are sports channels. The other half of the menu seems designed to appeal to prospective cord-cutters.
All kinds of channels that you’re probably familiar with if you have cable are included with the base plan. If you want to get PeopleTV, you’ll need to get fubo Extra, which costs a few bucks more. The only sports channel in that package is GINX TV, which covers e-sports. Fans of sports that don’t involve video games may want to look into Sports Plus.

Some of the non-sports channels that come with fuboTV’s base plan include MTV, IFC, Food Network, CMT, Comedy Central, Cartoon Network and Adult Swim. The fubo Extra add-on pack has not only PeopleTV, but also Cooking Channel, DIY Network, Game Show Network, BBC World News and lots of other popular general entertainment channels.
fuboTV became the first live TV service to offer 4K streams in July of 2018. Only select events are available in 4K, since the 4K feature is still in beta. fubo TV aired the entire 2018 World Cup on FOX and FS1 in 4K. Some MLB and NCAA football games are also available in 4K. After the 4K comes out of beta, more channels will likely become available in 4K.
You can see a full channel list here.
fuboTV has excellent support for all the most popular TV device platforms that are popular among cord-cutters. The only significant gap is game consoles.
- Living room devices: Amazon Fire TV, Android TV, Apple TV, Chromecast and Roku.
- Smart TVs and Blu-ray players: Samsung televisions as well as devices based on Fire TV, Android TV and Roku.
- Mobile devices and tablets: Android and iOS.
- Game consoles: None.
- Desktop browsers: Most browsers, Chrome is recommended.

When it comes to simultaneous streams, fuboTV is much more competitive than it used to be. When fuboTV first came out, three streams was the maximum number you could get and you started out with only two. Now, you get three streams by default and you can get as many as five.

fuboTV’s cloud DVR holds 30 hours of TV content unless you get another upgrade called Cloud DVR Plus. With Cloud DVR Plus, you can record up to 500 hours of TV. Some of fubo TV’s subscription plans include the Cloud DVR Plus upgrade, but others don’t. If you choose a plan that doesn’t have Cloud DVR Plus, you have to pay an extra fee each month to get it.
You can learn more about the fuboTV DVR here.
Since fuboTV’s main focus is live TV, most of the on-demand content you’ll find consists of recently aired TV episodes. However, some movies are available, too. You can find art films from Sundance, SyFy originals, AMC movies, National Geographic documentaries and other similar content in fuboTV’s on-demand library.
