Update: Since publishing, Google has pulled Roku casting support for YouTube TV.
Cord-cutters who love both YouTube TV and Roku finally have what they were looking for. Google’s live TV service is officially available on Roku. However, there’s a bit of a catch.
If you search for “Youtube TV” through your Roku channel browser, you’re going to be sorely disappointed. The channel is not quite officially available just yet. Instead, you’ll need to use Roku’s casting feature to push the live TV to your television set.
As reported by Cord Cutters News, neither YouTube nor Google officially announced this particular option. Google previously planned to have an app ready for both Roku and Apple TV by the end of last year. However, that option did not actually materialize. Instead, the company stated that the app would be available in the first quarter of 2018.
How to Cast YouTube TV on Roku
You need either a smartphone or a tablet to get YouTube’s live TV service on your Roku. You’ll also need the official YouTube app already installed onto your Roku device or Roku-enabled TV. Additionally, all of these devices need to be on the same Wi-Fi network.
With those items, simply play a live stream from your phone’s YouTube TV app. Then tap on the menu options from the top right of the screen, and cast to your Roku device. A “YouTube TV” symbol should appear on the screen.
There is still no word on when the official YouTube TV app will launch on the Roku.
