The Good Doctor, which follows the career of autistic savant Shaun Murphy as he cares for patients at St. Bonaventure Hospital in San Jose, is one of the most popular shows on TV.

But if you’re ready to save money by cancelling cable, you may be worried about how to watch The Good Doctor without cable. Can you still watch the latest episodes of this hit TV show?

The answer, of course, is yes. If you want to watch The Good Doctor without cable, you have more options than ever before. Here’s everything you need to know about how to keep watching this smash-hit TV show – while cancelling cable.

A Note About Broadcast Network Availability

When it comes to local broadcast channels, the usually-simple world of cord-cutting gets complicated – fast. This is because, unlike cable channels, broadcast networks like ABC, NBC, Fox, CBS and the CW are mostly provided by independently-owned “affiliate stations.”

This means that internet TV “skinny bundle” services like fuboTV and Sling TV must negotiate with many affiliate stations independently, to offer them as part of their TV service. If they don’t have a contract in place with that affiliate, they won’t be able to carry that station in your area.

This is why some of the below services don’t offer ABC in every region. When signing up, use the ZIP code lookup tool of each service to confirm whether or not they carry ABC and The Good Doctor in your area.

Hulu With Live TV

Hulu may just be our top choice for how to watch The Good Doctor without cable. Why? There are a few reasons, so let’s dive into the details now.

Plans, deals and pricing

First, let’s talk about the cost of Hulu With Live TV, and the channels you’ll get. This service costs $40 per month, which is a pretty good deal considering you get up to 70 channels, depending on your location.

Hulu has broadcast affiliate agreements in place with most ABC stations in major cities and metropolitan areas, so there’s a good chance you’ll be able to get ABC through this service and watch The Good Doctor without cable.

To check, we recommend visiting their website, clicking on the link that says “VIEW CHANNELS IN YOUR AREA,” and entering your ZIP code. Then, you’ll be able to see if you get ABC in your region.

You’ll also get most other broadcast networks, as well as a sampling of great cable news, sports, and entertainment networks like CNN, ESPN and Fox Sports, FX and TNT, and much more.

Hulu recently landed the on-demand broadcast rights to The Good Doctor (for a pretty penny), which means that if you get Hulu With Live TV, you’ll be able to watch new episodes as they are, and also re-watch as many old episodes of The Good Doctor as you want.

Beyond this, Hulu With Live TV also offers a number of other great features. You can stream on 2 devices at once, and stream on unlimited devices on your home WiFi network with the $15/month “Unlimited Streams” add-on.

You also get a free cloud DVR with 50 hours of storage, upgradeable to 200 hours for a $15/month fee. You can combine your Enhanced DVR with the Unlimited Streams add-on for a flat $20/fee if you want both.

Finally, Hulu With Live TV has a huge number of supported devices, including iOS and Android devices, web browsers, Roku, Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV, Chromecast, the Xbox One, 360, and Nintendo Switch gaming consoles, and Samsung/LG Smart TVs.

PlayStation Vue

Plans, deals and pricing

PlayStation Vue offers four different channel packages, which are as follows:

  • Access – 45+ channels, $45/month
  • Core – 60+ channels, $50/month
  • Elite – 90+ channels, $60/month
  • Ultra – All Elite channels plus HBO/Showtime, $80/month

To get ABC, you’ll only need to get the $45/month “Access” package, which may also include your local Fox, CBS, and NBC stations. You’ll also get a number of great entertainment, news, and sports channels like AMC, CNN, and ESPN.

Not all areas have ABC, though. To check if you get ABC in your area, click on the “Location” button on the PlayStation Vue website, next to the orange “START STREAMING” button, then enter your ZIP code. You’ll be able to view all of your local channels.

PlayStation Vue may be a bit pricey, but its features are really good, particularly if you have a large family and watch a lot of TV.

First, it has the best simultaneous streaming policy in the business. You can stream on up to 5 devices at once, which is more than any other service on this list by far.

You also get a free, unlimited cloud DVR, which will save all of your recordings for 28 days. This may seem a bit short, but it’s usually enough time to catch up on The Good Doctor, and any other content you may not be able to watch live.

And, despite the name, you don’t need a PlayStation to use this service. Of course, the PlayStation 3 and 4 consoles are supported. But so are iOS and Android devices, web browsers, the Amazon Fire TV, Chromecast, Apple TV, Roku, and some Android TV devices.

YouTube TV

YouTube TV is a newer entrant into the world of Internet TV, having launched in early 2017, and only recently expanded into most areas of the country. Is this Google-owned service a good way to watch The Good Doctor without cable? Find out.

Plans, deals and pricing

YouTube TV, like Hulu With Live TV, offers only a single bundle of channels, which will cost you $40/month. For your money, you’ll get around 70 channels, though this will vary based on your location.

This will include ABC in most – though not all – areas, as well as Fox, NBC, and CBS affiliates. To find out if you can get ABC with YouTube TV, just enter your ZIP code on the main landing page.

No matter where you are, though, you’ll also get a good number of cable channels like AMC, ESPN and Fox Sports as well as RSNs (Regional Sports Networks). Overall, the lineup of channels is really good.

YouTube TV really comes through when it comes to features. For one thing, you can stream on 3 devices at once, which is great for larger families.

You also get a totally free, unlimited cloud DVR. You can record as much content as you want for up to 9 months. In addition, you can create up to 6 individual user accounts, each of which gets its own recommendations, DVR, and so on.

And while device support for YouTube TV used to be somewhat lacking, it’s improved quite a bit in recent days. You can now stream through Chrome and on your Android/iOS devices, as well as on the Chromecast, Roku, Apple TV, and a number of Smart TVs from different manufacturers. The Amazon Fire TV is not supported, though.

DirecTV Now

DirecTV Now is owned by AT&T and was launched to try to recapture the lost profits caused by cord-cutters ditching satellite and cable TV. But is it worth it? Here’s everything you need to know.

Plans, deals and pricing

Similar to PlayStation Vue, DirecTV Now offers four different channel packages.

  • Live A Little – 65+ channels, $40/month
  • Just Right – 85+ channels, $55/month
  • Go Big – 105+ channels, $65/month
  • Gotta Have It  – 125+ channels, $75/month

To get ABC, all you need is the cheapest, $40/month Live A Little package. You’ll also get the other broadcast networks – Fox, NBC, and CBS, as well as the CW – if they are offered in your area. To check which stations you get, we recommend you use this tool from DirecTV.

DirecTV Now is somewhat lacking when it comes to features. You can only stream on 2 devices, with a third stream available for a $5/month fee.

And while you do get a cloud DVR (which was only released in the middle of 2018) it’s limited to only 20 hours of storage, which is very restrictive.

As far as device support goes, though, things are a bit more positive. You can watch DirecTV Now on your iOS and Android devices and web browser, as well as Roku, Amazon Fire TV, Apple TV, and the Google Chromecast.

fuboTV – Great Sports Channels, But No ABC

Unfortunately, fuboTV is not the best way to watch The Good Doctor without cable because they simply do not carry ABC.

Neither the $45/month fubo package nor the $50/month fubo Extra package contains ABC, though you can get your local NBC, Fox, and CBS affiliates, in most areas. fubo simply does not have any kind of contract in place with ABC to offer its content to subscribers.

This is a shame because fuboTV has a lot of other great channels, good features including 2 simultaneous streams (expandable to 3), a free 30-hour upgradeable DVR, and robust device support.

Unfortunately, though, you won’t be able to watch The Good Doctor without cable using fubo, so it’s not the best choice for you.

Sling TV – No ABC (Anymore)

Unfortunately, we can’t recommend Sling TV as a way to watch The Good Doctor without cable, at least, not anymore. This is a shame, because Sling TV’s Blue and Orange packages both cost $25, and offer a reasonably good way to watch most of your favorite cable and broadcast channels.

However, while Sling TV used to offer ABC as part of their “Broadcast Extra” add-on, it’s no longer available, according to the company. You could previously get it as part of a $5 add-on, but this is no longer the case.

So, while Sling TV is a pretty good deal if you want to watch other TV shows without cable, you can’t watch The Good Doctor without cable – which is definitely a deal breaker if you’re reading this article.

Or is it?

You Can Use an OTA Antenna to Get Local Channels With Sling or fubo

If you really like the channels offered by fuboTV or Sling TV, but the lack of ABC is a deal-breaker because you can’t watch The Good Doctor, there’s a simple solution.

You can use an Over-The-Air (OTA) antenna to get all of your local broadcast networks while using fuboTV or Sling TV to get cable channels (which are unavailable over-the-air).

If you purchase a standard TV antenna, plug it into your TV, and scan for channels, you’ll be able to get ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC, and a number of other broadcast networks in your area, and it won’t cost you a dime.

Want to get started? Here are a few resources from Flixed that can help you purchase and set up an OTA antenna. Check them out, and get started today.

The ABC Website and Apps

Another great way to watch live and past episodes of The Good Doctor without cable is the ABC website and downloadable ABC apps.

With a subscription to one of the above internet TV services, you can stream ABC live in certain areas. Take a look at this page to see if you’re eligible for live TV through ABC.

Even if you’re not in an area where you can stream The Good Doctor live on ABC, you can use your PlayStation Vue, Hulu With Live TV,  DirecTV Now, and YouTube TV to unlock past episodes.

Why do this? Because using the ABC website or app doesn’t count against your simultaneous streams. If you have Hulu With Live TV, for example, you can let 2 of your family members watch TV, while still streaming episodes of The Good Doctor from ABC at the same time. This gives you more flexibility.
