Before we Proceed
We highly recommend using a VPN when using Kodi. Kodi users have been known to receive copyright infringement notices for streaming movies, sports, and TV shows through various addons. If you would like to keep your streaming habits private, our recommendation is IPVanish - a complete privacy solution for Kodi users. It's also worth noting that purchasing a 12 month subscription will give you two months free.

Once you’ve downloaded the Noobs and Nerds zip file, open Kodi and click Add-ons from the side menu. Then, select the box icon.
Next, click Install from zip file and open noobsandnerds Repo (2.3.0).zip.
Step 2: Install UKTVPlay

A Geo-block Fix for UKTVPlay
If you try to use UKTVPlay outside the UK, nothing will happen when you try to open a live channel or an on-demand video via the UKTVPlay add-on. The channel will briefly try to load, and then you’ll see a “playback failed” error message.
The problem isn’t that there’s something wrong with the UKTVPlay add-on. The issue is that you’re being geo-blocked by UKTVPlay’s servers.
You can get access to the UKTVPlay from anywhere by using a VPN. After testing out many VPN services, we’ve found that the best Kodi VPN is IPVanish.
Here’s a step-by-step view of everything you need to do jump over UKTVPlay’s geo-block with IPVanish.
Step 1: Sign up for IPVanish
Prices start at $4.87 USD per month.
Step 2: Download the IPVanish program
Download the IPVanish program from the IPVanish site by clicking Apps. The IPVanish website will automatically redirect you to the version of the IPVanish program that’s compatible with your computer.
IPVanish works with Windows, macOS, Android and Amazon Fire TV.
Step 3: Install IPVanish
You don’t need to make any changes to the default options when installing IPVanish. Just keep clicking next, and the installer will take care of the rest.
Step 4: Open IPVanish and log in
Once you’ve logged into the IPVanish program using your IPVanish username and password, your screen will look like this:
Step 5: Turn on obfuscation mode
Navigate to Settings → Connection. Then, choose PPTP from the drop down menu and check the Obfuscate VPN traffic box. This step is required. Without it, you will likely get blocked by UKTVPlay.
Step 6: Select a UK server and click connect
Any UK server will suffice. Once the IPVanish program connects, your screen will look like this:
Get the IPVanish App
If you’re running Kodi on an Android-powered set-top TV box, just download the IPVanish app and log into a UK server before you pull up the UKTVPlay add-on.
What Can You Do With the UKTVPlay Add-on?
UKTVPlay provides access to free content from four different UK TV channels: Dave, Really, Yesterday and Drama.
Here’s what UKTVPlay’s main menu looks like:
The UKTVPlay add-on’s main menu offers several different ways to find shows. If you know the title of the show you want to watch, you can look it up via the search feature. Alternatively, you can browse by category, channel or open an alphabetical list of shows.
In case you aren’t familiar with the four UK channels that you can access via UKTVPlay, here’s a brief overview.
Dave TV’s demographic target is males between the ages of 16 and 34 – so it’s kind of like a British version of the American channel Spike TV. Dave is heavy on programs that feature cars, sarcastic comedy and reality TV competitions.
The British “lifestyle” channel Really is the female-oriented counterpart to Dave. Really’s target demographic is young women and its most popular programs are about paranormal investigations, makeovers and cooking.
Yesterday is the British equivalent of The History Channel. Tune in for shows about WWII, the mafia, natural disasters, biographies of historically important figures and UFOs.
Drama is where British TV dramas end up after they reach syndication. Check out this channel for repeats of classic police procedurals, period dramas and shows about doctors.
Interesting Shows to Watch On UKTVPlay
In case you’re not familiar with UKTVPlay, here are some critically acclaimed shows to get you started.
If you’re into British comedy, you should definitely check out Taskmaster – a critically acclaimed game show hosted by comedian Alex Horne. At the beginning of the show, Horne gives the contestants an envelope containing a strange list of tasks (conceal a pineapple, empty a bathtub, etc.). The teams compete to see who can come up with the most entertaining and creative solution. In 2017, Taskmaster earned a BAFTA nomination for best comedy program.
If you’re a fan of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, you may want to check out Red Dwarf – a character-driven sci-fi comedy about a group of hopelessly lost space adventurers who hate each other. Because they’re stuck together in a spaceship, they have no choice other than to find ways to get along.
Porters is a new medical comedy in the vein of Scrubs that’s picking up rave reviews across the pond. The main character is a self-absorbed hospital attendant named Simon.
“Deluded Simon Porter, dreams of becoming a doctor – but he has to start from the bottom and be a porter. His plan? Work his way up to be the best porter the NHS has ever seen.” – Dave TV website
Kelsey Grammer of Frasier fame guest stars as a visiting consultant neurologist.
Eat Your Heart Out
Eat Your Heart Out is a culinary tourism show with a twist – host Nick Helm’s girlfriend dumps him at the start of the series. Helm travels to Soho, Leeds, Berlin, Paris, Glasgow, Essex and Brighton to sample the local cuisine and deal with his post-breakup depression.
The UKTVPlay Add-on Vs. the UKTVPlay Website
If you run Kodi on Amazon Fire TV or on a set-top TV box like Nvidia Shield, the UKTVPlay add-on is the best way to watch UKTVPlay content. But if you’re on a laptop or desktop computer, the UKTVPlay website provides a much better experience.
UKTVPlay website interface
The UKTVPlay interface allows you to quickly flip from channel to channel. Plus, you can view plot synopses and other useful information.
In addition to the main interface, there’s also a TV guide you can use to find out what’s on. Unfortunately, there’s no way to grab a live stream of the 4 available channels. However, you can pull up a video of an episode if it has already aired.
How to sign up for a UKTVPlay account
To gain access to the UKTVPlay website, you have to create an account and log in.
Once you’ve created an account, you have to log onto IPVanish if you’re located outside the UK. Without a VPN, your video won’t load and you’ll see this black screen:
Is UKTVPlay legal?
In order to answer this question, we visited the UK’s government’s official TV license website: tvlicensing.co.uk.
“TV Licensing informs people of the need to buy a TV Licence. We send licence renewal letters and we process queries, applications and payments. We also maintain a database of licensed and unlicensed addresses in the UK and use this technology to identify and visit people we believe may be using TV receiving equipment without a valid licence.” – tvlicensing.co.uk
The British government requires that you pay for a license to watch any type of live TV from any source. You also have to pay for a license if you watch on-demand BBC programs.
Because UKTVPlay doesn’t have live TV or on-demand programs from the BBC, you don’t need a license to watch UKTVPlay legally.
UKTVPlay Vs. Other UK TV Add-ons
With iTV, UKTVPlay and BBC iPlayer, you can easily gain access to almost every major British TV channel. Here’s a quick summary of how the 3 major UK TV add-ons compare.
UKTVPlay vs. iTV
UKTVPlay is very similar to iTV only it gives you access to a different set of TV channels. With iTV, you get access to content from all 4 main iTV channels plus iTVBe, CITV and a channel for special live events called Events/Sports.
Like UKTVPlay, iTV can be accessed via the iTV website or via the iTV add-on. The main difference between the two is that iTV offers access to both previously aired episodes and live TV channel feeds. UKTVPlay only lets you watch on-demand episodes and lacks live feeds.
Because both UKTVPlay and iTV are free and totally legit (if you purchase a UK TV license), why not add both add-ons to your Kodi arsenal?
UKTVPlay vs. BBC iPlayer
In the official Kodi repository, there’s an add-on called iPlayer WWW. If you install it, you can watch live feeds of 31 different UK TV channels. Here’s the complete list:
BBC 1, 2 and 4, CBeebies, BBC News Channel, BBC Parliament, Alba, S4C, BBC One London, BBC One Scotland, BBC Two Northern Ireland, BBC Two Wales, BBC Two England, BBC One Cambridge, BBC One, Channel Islands, BBC One East, BBC One East Midlands, BBC One East Yorkshire, BBC One North East, BBC One North West, BBC One Oxford, BBC One South, BBC One South East, BBC One South West, BBC One West Midlands and BBC One Yorks.
There is a vast amount of previously aired TV episodes available on iPlayer WWW as well.
Like iTV and UKTVPlay, iPlayer is totally free and all you need is buy a UK TV license to access it legally.
How to get the iPlayer WWW add-on
Because iPlayer WWW is in the official Kodi repository, you don’t have to connect to a 3rd party repository to download and install it.
Just open Kodi, then navigate to Add-ons → box icon → Install from repository → Kodi Add-on repository → Video Add-ons → iPlayer WWW → Install
Wrapping It Up
If you’re into UK TV, the UKTVPlay Kodi add-on is definitely worth a look. UKTVPlay is very easy to install via the Noobs and Nerds repository and it gives you access to content from four major UK TV channels: Dave, Really, Yesterday and Drama. If you’re unfamiliar with these channels, you may want to check out the critically acclaimed shows Taskmasters, Red Dwarf, Porters and Eat Your Heart Out. Once you’re finished checking out UKTVPlay’s catalog, you may want to install the iPlayer WWW and iTV add-ons to get access to even more UK TV content.
