Bring yourself back to Los Angeles in 1932 with the excellent HBO series Perry Mason. The series centers on Perry Mason, a defense lawyer struggling financially who discovers himself suddenly involved in a crime scene that always has another layer to peel back. The series is based on a series of books by Erle Stanley Gardner and is not the first time that the characters have made it to a television show — the TV original was a run of seasons from 1957 – 1966. Perry has been a character on screen, in print, and on the radio for close to 90 years.
The show keeps you on the edge of your seat as Mason dives deeper and deeper into a crime scene as he desperately seeks after the truth. Be ready for an exciting ride!
Now, the current version of Perry Mason, initially filmed in 2020, isn’t available to watch everywhere. You can find the modern cast of Perry Mason streaming on HBO and HBO Max or you can purchase it on Amazon Prime Video.
Don’t be confused — you may also see Perry Mason available on Paramount+. That is the original TV series from 1958, not the current one from 2020. So only look into that if you’re feeling extra nostalgic.
What streaming services have Perry Mason?

So, like we already mentioned, Perry Mason is pretty much exclusive to HBO and HBO Max for streaming. Or you can purchase DVDs on sites like Amazon or use Amazon Prime Video to purchase Season 1 — and Season 2 when it comes out.
Now, there are many ways to get HBO as an add-on to existing streaming services you may already use! Amazon Prime Video previously offered this, but it doesn’t anymore. So be aware of that. Services that do offer HBO Max as an option to add-on include Hulu (and Hulu + Live TV) and YouTube TV – both for around $15 on top of their normal service pricing.
For simply wanting to stream Perry Mason, however — HBO is the way to go.
Unless you’re already paying for a service such as Hulu, YouTube TV, or DirecTV, the quickest way to gain direct access to streaming Perry Mason would be to just sign up for an HBO or HBO Max subscription. It’s the simplest solution without the need to add anything on. You can just choose if you want the package with or without ads, and go from there! HBO Max with ads is just $9.99 per month, and for HBO Max without ads, the price increases to $14.99 per month.
Can you watch Perry Mason for free?
Technically, you can’t watch Perry Mason for free because of the need to be able to access HBO’s services or have access to a service that has an option to include HBO as an add-on. However, do not despair! There are some services that you may be already paying for that include HBO in their packages for an extra fee — just make sure you read all the fine print.
If you have one of various specific AT&T wireless plans, HBO access will be included. As mentioned, this is only for specific plans and not every wireless plan. And if you have Cox as your cable provider, you can have access to the cheapest available HBO add-on possibility at only $10 per month. However, with all the options to have HBO as an add-on, it’s still a great choice to just pay for the full HBO or HBO Max service itself if you don’t use a service that requires HBO to be added to it at an additional cost.
What is Perry Mason about?
Perry Mason showcases a stunning cast and production crew, including Robert Downey Jr. and Susan Downey as Executive Producers. Robert Downey Jr. was the original choice to play Perry Mason’s character, but his role shifted into what it is now. The show stars Matthew Rhys as Perry Mason, Juliet Rylance as Della Street, and Chris Chalk as Paul Drake.
In the series, Perry Mason is a private investigator who has fallen on hard times financially, as did many others during the Great Depression. His marriage has failed and he’s also dealing with trauma from his time serving on the front lines in France during the First World War. Talk about having the deck stacked against you!
Despite Perry’s money troubles, Los Angeles is a city that seemed to avoid much of the hardships of the Great Depression when compared to the rest of the country at that time. When a young boy is kidnapped — a crime that develops in size and impact as the show goes on — Mason finds himself as the perfect person for the job, despite how he feels about the situation.
The show is based upon the original book series by Erle Stanley Gardner and other past incarnations of Perry Mason that appeared in radio shows, articles, and a TV show from the ’50s and ’60s. The current HBO version has only one season, but Perry Mason Season 2 is said to be upcoming — however, there’s no official release date yet.
HBO’s Perry Mason has gathered a steady audience and critical reception, including some award nominations. Perry Mason was nominated for 4 Primetime Emmy Awards. These were:
- Matthew Rhys for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series
- John Lithgow for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series
- John P. Goldsmith, Chris Farmer and Halina Siwolop for Outstanding Production Design for a Narrative Period or Fantasy Program (One Hour or More)
- David Franco for Outstanding Cinematography for a Single-Camera Series (One Hour)
