If you’re a Kansas City Royals fan, 2019 is going to be a good year. With a FOX–Royals contract in place, you’ll be able to watch Kansas City Royals online without cable this year at a low cost.

Below, we’ll explore your top options to watch every Royals game this year without cable. And don’t worry—even if you’re out of the local broadcast region for the Royals, you can still get every game this year live and on-demand.

Where Can I Watch the Kansas City Royals Online Without Cable?

As with every other MLB team, the Kansas City Royals will be playing 162 games this season. 161 of those games will be broadcast directly through FOX Sports Kansas City (which covers Kansas, Western and Central Missouri, Iowa, and Eastern Nebraska).

Only one game won’t be available on FOX Sports Kansas City: A June 13 game on against the Detroit Tigers, which will be broadcast nationally on ESPN. There’s also a May 18 game against the LA Angels that’s set to broadcast nationally on FOX Sports 1, but you’ll still be able to view it through FOX Sports Kansas City.

In the past, regional sports networks (RSNs) like FOX Sports Kansas City were only available through traditional cable TV packages. Those packages typically lock users into long-term contracts, and often have “introductory” prices hidden in the details that later jump rather significantly after the first year.

Now, however, there are multiple “cord-cutting” options that let you watch Kansas City Royals online without cable. These low-cost options, such as Sling TV, fuboTV, PlayStation Vue, and others, can save you hundreds of dollars on your cable TV bill while still giving you access to the channels you want.

Let’s explore the half-dozen options currently available for Royals fans who want FOX Sports Kansas City at a lower cost.

FuboTV

One of the oldest services of its kind of the market, fuboTV has maintained its sports-focused appeal for over 4 years. It offers a rather beefy sports package that includes coverage of161 Kansas City Royals games this year.

Channels and packages

As with most other live TV streaming services, you have a few package options with fuboTV:

The service’s lowest-priced, $44.99 per month package is going to be all you need to get Royals games this year. As long as you’re in the FOX Sports Kansas City broadcast zone, you’ll be able to enjoy 161 Royals games. The only game you’ll miss out on is the single nationally broadcast game through ESPN. Despite having an extensive sports package, fuboTV has been unable to sign a contract with ESPN.

Features and extras

You’ll find fuboTV has good features rolled into the package. For the price, you’ll get a 30-hour cloud DVR which can be upgraded to a rather massive 500 hours for $9.99 per month.

You’ll also get 2 simultaneous streams, which can be upgraded to 3 streams with a $5 per month upgrade. The service also offers a 72-hour replay feature that lets you watch content from most of the channels on offer within 72 hours without using up any of your DVR space.

As for device support, fuboTV will work with most devices you already own:

  • Living room devices: Android TV, Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV, Chromecast and Roku
  • Smart TVs and Blu-ray players: Fire TV, Roku TV and Android TV
  • Mobile devices and tablets: Android and iOS
  • Game consoles: None
  • Desktop browsers: fuboTV recommends Chrome, but most web browsers will work

If fuboTV sounds like a viable option, there’s a 7-day free trial for new subscribers.

One of the best options on the list, PlayStation Vue is not the cheapest. However, at $49 per month for 70+ channels in most areas, you’ll be able to enjoy all 162 Kansas City Royals games through this service at an impressively low price.

Channels and packages

PlayStation Vue has 4 channel packages to offer:

  • Core: 70+ channels for $49.99 per month
  • Elite: 90+ channels for $59.99 per month

With that in mind, PlayStation Vue among the cheapest options for getting every Royals game live this year for those living within the RSN’s broadcast region.

Features and extras

PlayStation Vue’s features are a mix of mediocre and amazing. The mediocre: A 28-day cloud DVR, which is smaller than most other services on the market.

Hulu + Live TV is one of the newest services on the market, but it’s a good option, and it offers just one streaming package of channels that includes FOX Sports Kansas City for those within that RSN’s broadcast region as well as ESPN.

Channels and packages

Priced similarly to fuboTV, you can watch Kansas City Royals online without cable through Hulu for just $44.99 per month.

For that price, you’ll get 60+ channels, including FOX Sports Kansas City and ESPN. That means 100 percent coverage for Royals games this year, as long as you’re in the broadcast region for FOX Sports Kansas.

You can also get the service for $50.99 per month to remove ads from the on-demand library (but not the live TV channels), or for $43.99 per month if you want Live TV without Hulu on-demand.

Features and extras

Hulu offers an interesting selection of features, some of which make it completely unique on the internet TV market. First, the service’s entire on-demand library, including its growing selection of must-see originals, is included for no extra charge with your subscription.

You’ll also get 2 simultaneous streams per account and a generous 50-hour cloud DVR, both of which can be upgraded with add-ons for an additional cost. You can boost the DVR to 200 hours, while you can purchase an add-on that lets you stream on 3 devices outside of your home network, and an unlimited number of devices at home. Each add-on costs $9.99/month, or $14.99 if you want to combine them.

  • Smart TVs: Certain Samsung and LG televisions, as well as Android TV and Roku TV

YouTube TV

YouTube TV is one of the most-used services on the market with a growing user base and for good reason. This service from Google offers a good selection of channels for a low price, including FOX Sports Kansas City.

Channels and packages

For just $40 per month, you’ll get 60+ channels through YouTube TV. That includes FOX Sports Kansas City for those living within that RSN’s broadcast region, and ESPN. You can add some additional channels, such as movie networks, to the service, but if you’re trying to save money, the base package is all you need.

Features and extras

YouTube TV has among the best features you’ll find on the market. For the price, you’ll get a 9-month cloud DVR with unlimited recording space. That’s similar to what PlayStation Vue is offering, but with a much longer window of time before your recordings expire.

You’ll also be able to share your account with 5 other people, and you can stream on up to 3 devices at the same time.

While there’s no native support for Amazon Fire devices, you can watch Kansas City Royals with YouTube TV’s many other various options:

  • Living room devices: Android TV, Apple TV, Chromecast and Roku (no Amazon Fire TV devices)
  • Smart TVs and Blu-ray players: Certain models from HiSense, LG, Samsung and Sharp, as well as Android TV and Roku TV
  • Mobile devices and tablets: Android and iOS
  • Game consoles: Xbox One
  • Desktop browsers: Chrome is recommended, although other browsers may also work

There’s a 7-day free trial for new YouTube TV subscribers.

DirecTV Now

DirecTV Now is a potential option, but it has significant limitations, which we’ll discuss in further detail below.

Channels and packages

DirecTV Now recently adjusted its packages. Now, there are two packages available:

  • Plus: 40+ channels / $50 per month
  • Max: 50+ channels / $75 per month

DirecTV Now does not carry FOX Sports Kansas City. Instead, it carries FOX Sports Midwest, which it states carries Royals games. And that’s partially true. Some Royals games may be simulcast on FOX Sports Midwest this year, although it’s unclear which games, and when. Additionally, DirecTV Now is not clear on which package offers FOX Sports Midwest. The “even more sports” option is the $75/month Max package, but you’ll need to go through the sign-up process to determine which package carries the channel for you in your area.

All told, DirecTV Now may be an option, but it’s not an option we can currently recommend as the company’s messaging for Royals fans is very unclear at this point.

Sling TV

Sling TV is one of the oldest services on the market, but it’s also a very limited option for anyone that wants to watch Kansas City Royals online without cable.

Channels and packages

Sling TV offers 2 package options, and a combination of the two:

The package you would need through this service is Sling Blue, which carries FOX networks and 40+ other channels for $25 per month.

However, Sling TV only carries FOX Sports Midwest, which has no current contract for Royals games. There may be some games broadcast through FOX Sports Midwest, but that’s no guarantee, as FOX Sports Kansas City has exclusive rights to the games.

The service does carry ESPN in its Sling Orange package, also $25 per month, and you can combine the two packages to get both ESPN and FOX Sports Midwest for $40 per month.

With that being the case, Sling TV is a potential option that we can’t recommend you try above the other options due to these notable limitations.

MLB.TV

Last, but not least, there’s MLB.TV. This is the go-to option for anyone who wants to watch Kansas City Royals online without cable, but can’t get access to FOX Sports Kansas City. With MLB.TV, anyone out-of-network can watch almost every Royals game live and on-demand.

Plans and coverage

If you’re in the US or Canada, you can purchase one of two sports packages:

  • All Teams: $118.99/year, or $24.99/month for every out-of-market game
  • Single Team: $91.99/year (about $8/month) for every out-of-market game for a single team of your choice

To save the most money, opt for the “Single Team” package. You’ll get 161 Royals game (minus the nationally-broadcast ESPN game) live. If you’re a mega-fan of multiple teams, however, the “All Teams” package is the best option.

In addition, if you subscribe to MLB.TV and live in Kansas City, you won’t be able to watch Royals games live. You’ll have to wait until 90 minutes after the game has finished airing. If you live out of the Kansas City Market, though you can watch all of this year’s games live, though national blackouts still apply.

Features

MLB TV is also fairly feature-rich. You’ll be able to watch in 60 fps HD, get unique camera angles, and in-game stats right on the screen.

There are also a large number of apps available for this device:

  • Living room devices: MLB.TV app for Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV Sticks and Roku.
  • Smart TVs: MLB.TV app for certain Samsung televisions, Amazon Fire TV, Android TV and Roku TV
  • Mobile devices and tablets: At Bat app for Android, iOS, and Amazon Fire tablets
  • Game consoles: MLB.TV app for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
  • Desktop browsers: Most browsers

Make sure MLB.TV is the option you want before signing up, however. There is no free trial, and refunds are not guaranteed.
