When Alicia Keys hosts this year’s Grammy Awards, you’ll see performances by Maren Morris, Ricky Martin and many of the nominated artists. But if you’ve canceled your cable subscription, how are you going to watch the show? Fortunately, you have options — eight of them — to watch the Grammy Awards without cable.

Streaming the Grammys: What You Need to Know

61st Grammy Awards

The 61st Grammy Awards will air this Sunday night at 8:00 Eastern time on CBS. In years past, the only way you could watch the Grammys is with an over-the-air antenna or through a cable subscription. Thanks to the new generation of television streaming services, you can watch the Grammy Awards without cable or rabbit ears.

Or can you? CBS may be a national TV network, but its availability depends on a complex combination of licensing deals. Some streaming services don’t carry CBS at all. Other services can carry CBS, but they only stream feeds from certain local stations.

What you need to understand is that CBS and the other broadcast networks only own a handful of their own local stations. Other companies own the vast majority of the 1,700 local television stations in the United States. A streaming service has to cut a deal with CBS and then cut separate deals with each station owners. Some companies, like YouTube, have done a great job and have local streams almost everywhere. Other companies are much less reliable. Sling TV, for example, is the largest streaming service in the United States and yet it does not have a deal to stream any CBS TV stations.

The website for every streaming service will use your zip code to tell you what channels they can actually deliver to you. Be sure to use those tools before committing to a subscription.

Streaming TV Services That Support CBS

CBS All Access

Naturally, the easiest way to stream live content from CBS is to use the network’s own streaming service. CBS All Access has built a reputation for developing original content like The Good Wife spinoff The Good Fight. It also streams live feeds from your local CBS stations. There is, however, a catch. Even CBS has to sign streaming deals with its own affiliates. Availability of the live stream does vary by market.

Content and packages

CBS All Access has two monthly plans to choose from, with discounts for annual subscribers. The upgrade plan will eliminate commercials from most of the on-demand content. The live streams, however, will still have all the ads.

Episodes from current TV series appear in the on-demand library soon after they air on the network’s national broadcast. In addition, you get on-demand access to a catalog of 10,000 episodes from CBS shows like I Love Lucy, The Brady Bunch, and Family Ties.

The catalog of original programming on CBS All Access is gradually expanding. Star Trek: Discovery is the first of several Trek-based series that will only be broadcast via the internet. Tell Me a Story is a darker, modern take on classic fairy tales.

Features and extras

Unlike every other streaming service, CBS All Access doesn’t provide a cloud DVR or let you pause live TV streams. In the case of TV series, this won’t inconvenience you too much. All of CBS’ prime time programming is available on demand. It will inconvenience you if you want to record a live event or programming from your local CBS station.

CBS All Access does offer a feature you won’t find on many other streaming services: you can use the Download & Play function to save TV episodes on a mobile device so you can watch it later.

Simultaneous streaming supports as many as five devices at a time. You will find CBS All Access apps for all of the following devices:

  • Living room devices: Android TV, Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV, Chromecast and Roku.
  • Smart TVs and Blu-ray players: Select Samsung and Vizio televisions.
  • Mobile devices and tablets: Android and iOS.
  • Game consoles: PlayStation 4, Xbox One.
  • Desktop browsers: Watch through the CBS website.

fuboTV

Even though it got its start as a sports-only streaming service, fuboTV has a good selection of national networks and basic cable channels. You still get more sports content than on any other streaming service, but fuboTV is definitely an option for watching the Grammy Awards.

Channels and packages

Because its original focus was sports, especially world soccer, half of fuboTV’s subscription plans serve speakers of Spanish and Portuguese.

The streaming service’s cable-replacement plans are fubo and fubo Extra. In both cases, you may be able to stream your local CBS station.

With more than eighty channels, even the entry-level fubo plan can meet the needs of anyone in the household. Sports fans can augment the selection by paying the higher price for the fubo Extra plan or by subscribing to fuboTV’s add-on packages.

There is one thing sports fans should know before subscribing: you can’t watch ESPN on fuboTV.

Features and extras

The standard cloud DVR that comes with both fubo and fubo Extra lets you record thirty hours of content. Bumping up your monthly subscription by $10 will expand that capacity to five hundred hours.

Each fuboTV account supports two simultaneous streams. Adding $6 more to your subscription will expand that to support a third device.

  • Living room devices: Android TV, Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV, Chromecast and Roku.
  • Smart TVs and Blu-ray players: Devices based on Fire TV, Roku and Android TV.
  • Mobile devices and tablets: Android and iOS.
  • Game consoles: None.
  • Desktop browsers: fuboTV recommends Chrome.

PlayStation Vue

PlayStation Vue’s ties to the Sony game console is a thing of the past. Today, you can find the PlayStation Vue app on just about any device.

Channels and packages

This is one of the streaming services that try to recreate the cable experience at a lower price. PlayStation Vue gives you a choice between four subscription plan. As you move up in cost, Sony adds more TV channels. CBS and the other national broadcast networks come standard with all four plans — assuming your local station is available.

  • Access: 45+ channels for $45 per month.
  • Core: 70+ channels for $50 per month.
  • Elite: 94 channels for $60 per month.
  • Ultra: 96 channels for $80 per month.

The Access plan is designed to meet the TV-watching needs of most households. Sports fans will want to look at the Core Plan. Or you can pay for the Elite plan and get every basic cable channel PlayStation Vue offers. It’s still a fraction of the cost of a cable subscription. If HBO and Showtime original content is a priority, the upgrade to Ultra offers a lot of bang for the buck.

Features and extras

PlayStation Vue has a really compelling set of standard features — so compelling that the service doesn’t bother selling upgrades. The cloud DVR has unlimited recording capacity, although those recordings expire after 28 days. In addition, your family can use as many as five devices at the same time.

The app ecosystem is also pretty strong — with one exception. You cannot stream PlayStation Vue on Microsoft’s Xbox game consoles.

  • Living room devices: Apple TV, Android TV, Amazon Fire TV, Chromecast and Roku.
  • Smart TVs and Blu-ray players: Televisions based on Amazon Fire TC, Android TV and Roku.
  • Mobile devices and tablets: Android, Amazon Fire Tablets and iOS.
  • Game consoles: PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4.
  • Desktop browsers: Chrome, Firefox, Safari and Microsoft Edge.

YouTube TV

Of all the streaming services, YouTube TV is the one that gives you the best chance of having your local CBS station. More than 90% of the markets where YouTube TV is available have live streams from their local ABC, CBS, Fox and NBC stations.

Channels and packages

The single $40-per-month subscription plan gets you live streams from more than sixty channels. YouTube TV also offers extra subscriptions to premium movie channels like Showtime and specialist channels like CuriosityStream.

Features and extras

As long as six or fewer people live in your house, you can create a separate user profile for each of them. That lets YouTube TV tailor each person’s experience with their own recommendations and viewing history.

Each person also gets their own cloud DVR with unlimited recording capacity. The recorded content won’t expire for nine months.

However, you can’t have all six people streaming at the same time. YouTube TV limits simultaneous streams to three devices. While the device ecosystem is decent, Google’s on-going battles with Amazon means YouTube TV won’t work on Amazon’s Echo or Fire TV devices.

  • Living room devices: Android TV, Apple TV, Chromecast and Roku.
  • Smart TVs and Blu-ray players: Certain models from HiSense, LG, Samsung and Sharp as well as televisions based on Android TV and Roku.
  • Mobile devices and tablets: Android and iOS.
  • Game consoles: Xbox One.
  • Desktop browsers: Chrome.

Hulu with Live TV

Hulu has traditionally been seen as a Netflix competitor, with its huge library of on-demand content. But it is also a great option for watching live television. Hulu with Live TV adds a decent selection of channels to the service’s on-demand library.

Channels and packages

Hulu with Live TV’s standard subscription plan includes more than fifty broadcast and basic cable channels. At the time of publication, the plan costs $40 per month. At the end of February, however, the monthly price rises to $45.

An extra $4 monthly charge will remove advertising from Hulu’s on-demand library. You still have to watch the ads on the live TV streams.

Features and extras

The cloud DVR lets you record a generous fifty hours of content. If that isn’t enough, you can add $15 to your monthly bill to record two hundred hours. Another nice feature of the upgrade is the ability to fast forward through commercials.

As with most services, Hulu limits the standard subscription to two simultaneous streams. Expanding that to three streams requires another $15 bump to your subscription. If you get both the device and DVR upgrades, though, you only have to pay $20 per month.

  • Living room devices: Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV, Chromecast and Roku.
  • Smart TVs and Blu-ray players: Certain Samsung and LG televisions as well as some devices based on Amazon Fire TV or Roku.
  • Mobile devices and tablets: Android and iOS.
  • Game consoles: Nintendo Switch, Xbox One and Xbox 360.
  • Desktop browsers: Most browsers.

DirecTV Now

DirecTV Now is the second-largest streaming service in the United States. Like PlayStation Vue, it tries to reproduce the cable-watching experience without the hassles or cost.

Channels and packages

All of DirecTV Now’s subscription plans, the four English-language options as well as the Spanish-language option, carry the broadcast networks. DirecTV Now has done a decent job of signing up local TV station owners, so there’s a good chance you’ll get the live CBS stream.

  • Live a Little: 65+ channels / $40 per month.
  • Just Right: 85+ channels / $55 per month.
  • Go Big: 105+ channels / $65 per month.
  • Gotta Have It: 125+ channels / $75 per month.
  • Todo y Más: 90+ spanish-language channels / $45 per month.

Upgrading to the Just Right plan expands the number of lifestyle and entertainment channels. Sports fans may prefer the Go Big plan. Or you can unlock the entire DirecTV Now lineup — and get the full range of Starz movie channels — by going with the Gotta Have It plan.

Features and extras

The cloud DVR is DirecTV Now’s weakest feature. There’s no way to upgrade beyond the 20-hour limit.

You can upgrade the number of devices that can stream DirecTV Now at the same time from two to three by paying $5 per month.

  • Living room devices: Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV, Chromecast and Roku.
  • Smart TVs and Blu-ray players: Samsung and Amazon Fire TV televisions.
  • Mobile devices and tablets: Android and iOS.
  • Game consoles: None, but Xbox One support is “coming soon”.
  • Desktop browsers: DirecTV Now only streams to Chrome and Safari browsers. With Internet Explorer and Firefox, you can only manage your settings.

Over-the-Air Streaming

HD tuners let you watch grammy awards without cable
Source: SiliconDust

Of course, there is a way to get live content from CBS and the other national broadcast networks without having to pay a monthly subscription. Simply get an HDTV antenna and connect it to a networked HDTV tuner. Services like HD HomeRun and Plex will serve up that content to any device on your home network. You won’t have limits on the number of devices either. The number of programs you can record will only be limited by the size of your computer’s hard drives.
