Watch Discovery Life on Philo

Philo on tablets

If you’re the kind of person that likes watching channels like Discovery Life but hates spending money on TV entertainment, Philo might be an interesting option for you. Before you check it out, you should know that there aren’t any sports channels in Philo’s menu. Instead, Philo offers all kinds of lifestyle and edu-tainment channels for a steeply discounted price.

Philo Pricing and Packages

Philo only has one $20 subscription plan. That makes it not only one of the cheapest cable alternatives on the market, but also one of the most straightforward. Other streaming services try to lure you in with budget plans, but then try to upsell you with all kinds of different add-on packages.

Philo Channels

The base plan comes with 58 channels. Discovery Life is just one of the channels you’ll get. Other similar channels in the lineup include Animal Planet, Discovery, Discovery Family and Travel Channel.

Philo Supported Devices

Philo has apps for all the popular cord-cutting devices, including iPhone, Android, Chromecast, Roku and more. But for some reason, the Android mobile app lacks a key feature: it doesn’t play live streams. Fortunately, there’s a workaround: you can use your mobile Chrome browser to log into the Philo website if you want to watch TV on your Android phone.

  • TV streaming media players: Apple TV (4th gen and up), Amazon Fire TV (all models), Chromecast and Roku (all current models).
  • Smart TVs: Android TV (5.0 and up).
  • Mobile devices and tablets: Android (7.0 and up, Chrome browser), iOS (10.3 and up).
  • Game consoles: None.
  • Desktop browsers: Most Mac and PC browsers.

Check here for more information on Philo’s supported devices.

Philo Simultaneous Streams

When it comes to account sharing, Philo meets the industry standards. Up to three different people can use one Philo account at the same time. In other words, the simultaneous stream limit is three devices.

To learn more about Philo’s simultaneous streams, click here.

Philo DVR

Philo has an excellent unlimited DVR that saves whatever you record for 30 days. You can record as much programming as you like, without having to be concerned about running into limits or paywalls.

Philo On-Demand Library

Though Philo does have some on-demand content, it’s no match for the likes of Hulu and Netflix. The Philo website says that its on-demand library includes 25,000 on-demand titles.

Watch Discovery Life with fuboTV

Just a few days ago, Variety reported that sports-centric streaming service fuboTV had signed a deal to carry several Discovery channels, including Discovery Life. These new channels continue the trend of fuboTV pivoting into the realm of general entertainment. When fuboTV first came out, the only channels that it offered were sports channels. However, the company still hasn’t addressed its major drawback: lack of support for ESPN channels. It makes up for this with live 4K streams and by offering a wide range of niche sports channels that most other streaming services don’t carry.

fuboTV Pricing and Packages

Like Philo, fuboTV keeps things relatively simple when it comes to pricing. The main package is a $55/month plan that includes over 90 channels, half of which are sports channels. There are, however, a few add-ons that you can get if you want more entertainment options. fubo Extra costs $6/month and comes with 30 additional general entertainment channels. Sports Plus costs $9/month and comes with 23 sports channels.

fuboTV Channels

Since the fuboTV-Discovery deal just happened, you may have to wait for fuboTV to add Discovery Life to its channel menu. The good news: fuboTV has already stated that it would add Discovery Life to fubo Standard. In other words, you won’t have to buy an add-on pack to get it. Other channels that come with fubo Standard include MTV, IFC, Food Network, CMT, Comedy Central, Cartoon Network and Adult Swim– and that’s just the tip of the iceberg. There are 90 channels in all. Around half the channels are sports channels, but there are lots of good educational channels in the base plan as well.

You can see a full channel list here.

fuboTV Supported Devices

fuboTV has excellent support for all the common TV devices that cord-cutters use. The only significant omission is game consoles.

You can learn more about fuboTV’s supported devices here.

fuboTV Simultaneous Streams

fuboTV has a default two-device simultaneous stream limit. However, you can add on a third if you get a paid upgrade. Most streaming services support two simultaneous streams, but some offer more.

You can learn more about fuboTV simultaneous streams here.

fuboTV DVR

fuboTV’s cloud DVR holds 30 hours of TV content unless you get another upgrade, which gives you 500 hours of recording time.

You can learn more about the fuboTV DVR here.

fuboTV On-Demand Library

fuboTV’s main focus is live TV. However, there is some on-demand content as well.

Watch Discovery Life on PlayStation Vue

Sony’s PlayStation Vue also carries Discovery Life. One of the most misunderstood things about this streaming service is its name. But don’t be fooled by the fact that the word “PlayStation” is a part of its brand name. You don’t need a PlayStation console to use it. Just like Philo and fuboTV, PlayStation Vue is available on a wide variety of different devices. Another nice thing about it is that it has very good features. On the other hand, not all PlayStation Vue subscribers can get Discovery Life. You need one of the pricey, deluxe plans to get it.

PlayStation Vue Pricing and Packages

There are four different plans to choose from: Access, Core, Elite and Ultra. Prices range from $45 to $80. The more you pay, the more channels you get. The cheapest plan that has Discovery Life is Elite, which costs $65/month.

PlayStation Vue Channels

You get around 50 channels with Access, 70 with Core and 100 with Elite and Ultra. The difference between Elite and Ultra is that Ultra comes with premium channels like HBO and Cinemax. If you don’t care about movie channels, Elite is the better deal. Both plans have Discovery Life, but Elite is $20/month cheaper.

PlayStation Vue Supported Devices

Unless you need a streaming service for Xbox, you’ll likely find a compatible PlayStation Vue app:

  • TV streaming media players: Apple TV (4th gen and up), Android TV (all gens), Amazon Fire TV and Fire TV Stick (all gens), Chromecast (1st gen and up) and Roku (firmware 8.0 and up).
  • Smart TVs: Amazon Fire TV (all gens), Android TV (all gens) and Roku (firmware 8.0 and up).
  • Mobile devices and tablets: Android OS 5.0 and up, iOS 9 and up, and Amazon Fire HD6 tablets and up.
  • Game consoles: PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4.
  • Desktop browsers: Chrome, Firefox, Safari and Microsoft Edge are recommended (most recent versions will work).

PlayStation Vue Simultaneous Streams

One of the best things about PlayStation Vue is its generous account sharing policy. You can use one account to stream to five different screens at once. This makes it an excellent choice for people with lots of roommates or a big family.

PlayStation Vue DVR

In addition to the generous five-stream simultaneous stream limit, PlayStation Vue users get unlimited DVRs. This combination makes PlayStation Vue very competitive when it comes to features.

PlayStation Vue On-Demand Library

PlayStation Vue has some on-demand content. Many of the titles it has are recently-aired TV shows. Most TV shows expire after a few weeks. There is a small selection of movies in the library, too.

Watch Discovery Life on Hulu with Live TV

Hulu with Live TV also carries Discovery Life. However, there’s a catch: you have to get a special add-on to get it. That’ll add a significant cost to an already somewhat pricey service. Still, it may be worth it to go ahead and get Hulu with Live TV anyway– especially if you don’t already have an on-demand streaming service. None of the other live TV streaming services can compete with what Hulu with Live TV offers in the way of on-demand movies and TV shows.

Hulu with Live TV Pricing and Packages

Hulu’s main subscription plan doesn’t come with Discovery Life, but it does have Discovery, Animal Planet and over 60 other popular cable TV channels. The base package will cost you $45/month, which is reasonable– but you’ll pay more if you want feature upgrades. You’ll need the $8/month Entertainment add-on to add Discovery Life to your menu.

Hulu with Live TV Supported Devices

Hulu with Live TV has above-average support for TV devices. Whether you have an Amazon Fire TV or Roku, you’ll likely find a Hulu with Live TV app.

  • Living room devices: Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV, Chromecast and Roku.
  • Smart TVs and Blu-ray players: Certain Samsung and LG televisions as well as some devices based on Amazon Fire TV or Roku.
  • Mobile devices and tablets: Android and iOS.
  • Game consoles: Nintendo Switch, Xbox One and Xbox 360.
  • Desktop browsers: Most browsers.

Hulu with Live TV DVR

If you hate commercials, you may want to consider buying Hulu with Live TV’s DVR upgrade. Without it, you’ll have to sit through repetitive advertisements when you watch your recordings.
