If you’re outside of the US, whether living or traveling, you may want access to a long list of streaming services, such as American Netflix, Hulu, HBO, YouTube, and others, which are blocked in foreign countries. And you may be trying to use playmoTV to do that just that. However, one of a few playmoTV alternatives may be in order if you’re looking to access Netflix.
PlaymoTV was created to help unblock US streaming sites for those outside the US, but unfortunately, it no longer works with Netflix.
Additionally, playmoTV has several security issues that make it less valuable of a service. As such, you may want to consider a few playmoTV alternatives that can unblock Netflix regions and won’t get blocked by the streaming services of your choice.
VPNs Unblock Streaming Sites Better Than PlaymoTV
We’ll cover this in more detail later, but you may be wondering why you need a playmoTV alternative at all. The reason is that playmoTV, while functional, uses what’s known as SmartDNS to bypass content blocking.
SmartDNS services change your IP address and make it appear as if you’re connecting from a US-based computer. However, they lack the type of security features you want and need while browsing online.
SmartDNS services are also comparatively easy to detect and block. This is why playmoTV no longer functions with Netflix. The streaming service uses software to detect and block SmartDNS services like playmoTV.
Instead, you’ll want to utilize a virtual private network or VPN. These services also change your IP address and spoof your location to allow you to unblock content.
However, VPN services operate very differently, connecting you to a remote server in the country of your choice. They also use a private, encrypted tunnel, which completely anonymizes your identity and adds a layer of security not available through SmartDNS.
Additionally, VPN services can employ counter-measures against blocking methods Netflix and other services use. As a result, VPNs are far less likely to get blocked.
Compared to playmoTV and other SmartDNS services, VPNs are safer, more secure, and far more effective at unblocking geo-restricted content.
Best PlaymoTV Alternatives
The best playmoTV alternatives are those that will work with all of the services that playmoTV lists on their website, and more. Additionally, a good service will offer the option to use your VPN on multiple devices, as one of playmoTV’s selling points is the fact that it can work on a large number of devices.
Here are the top 3 alternatives to playmoTV that will provide you with greater benefits than a SmartDNS.
One of the most well-respected VPN services around, ExpressVPN offers some competitive advantages over playmoTV. The most immediate one is the fact that ExpressVPN lets you access American Netflix and many other Netflix regions around the world.
What we like
There’s a lot to like about ExpressVPN, but we’ll start with the most important features. As stated, ExpressVPN works with American Netflix, immediately making it a better option than playmoTV. However, you’ll find that ExpressVPN works with all of the same services listed by playmoTV as well.
Beyond that, ExpressVPN maintains a large number of attractive features that are a notable draw. For those looking to use playmoTV, the service is fairly limited. You can use playmoTV to change your DNS settings and IP address, but playmoTV focuses specifically on US and UK content. ExpressVPN, however, let’s you access streams and unblock content from across the globe.
With ExpressVPN, you can access over 2,000 servers in over 90 countries. The service also has servers in over 140 cities around the world. So not only can you get American and UK content, and many other locations that playmoTV does not offer.
What’s more, ExpressVPN has highly-encrypted services that allow you to browse the web anonymously. PlaymoTV’s SmartDNS services will give away not just your real location, but also your real IP address and identity.
In contrast, ExpressVPN offers advanced security features. For example, if the VPN service goes down, you can utilize the app’s automatic kill switch to cut off network access and avoid broadcasting your identity.
ExpressVPN also lets you pay with far more options than with playmoTV. While both services accept major credit cards, PayPal and Bitcoin, ExpressVPN offers a much larger range of payment services.
Finally, if you need to access ExpressVPN on any device, you can. You can either use the ExpressVPN app for Windows, MacOS, iOS, Android, Amazon Fire TV, or Linux, or you can install the software on a router and broadcast your VPN connection to any device in your home. That way, all devices are covered.

What we don’t like
PlaymoTV has one key advantage over ExpressVPN, and that’s in price. You can get playmoTV for a fairly low cost, but ExpressVPN is going to cost you far more per month.
ExpressVPN costs $12.95 per month if you go with their month-to-month option. You can bring that cost down to $9.95 per month for a 6-month plan, or $8.32 per month for the annual subscription.
By comparison, playmoTV is $4.99 for a monthly subscription, or $49.95 (the equivalent of $4.16 per month) if you prepay for the whole year. This means that at its cheapest, ExpressVPN is twice as expensive as playmoTV.
However, ExpressVPN offers far more in the way of security, anonymity, and unblocking options. It’s also less likely to be blocked in the future than playmoTV. Additionally, if unblocking Netflix is an essential factor for you, playmoTV simply won’t do that.
Thankfully, ExpressVPN offers a 30-day money-back guarantee, compared to the 7-day free trial offered by playmoTV. You can try ExpressVPN for a full month before you decide whether or not the service is for you.
An interesting option on our list, VyprVPN easily beats out playmoTV. It offers great security features that help it get around content blocking – unlike playmoTV.
What we like
The biggest selling point to VyprVPN is their “Chameleon” VPN protocol. Chameleon is a unique, proprietary protocol that VyprVPN designed in the wake of the US government hacking scandal (think Edward Snowden).
Following that event, VyprVPN’s parent company, Golden Frog, decided they wanted to provide more security for online users that could not be hacked by governments, let alone streaming services.
The result of that was Chameleon, which is a modified version of OpenVPN that completely anonymizes your location and evades detection. VyprVPN did not create Chameleon with the express intention of unblocking content from companies like Netflix, but it’s very good at doing just that.
With VyprVPN, you will have access to over 700 servers in more than 60 countries. The service can also be used on a large number of operating systems, including the standard ones (Windows, MacOS, iOS, Android, Linux).
VyprVPN can also be installed on a router so you can cover your entire household.
You will also find slightly more payment options for VyprVPN than you will with playmoTV. While VyprVPN does not take Bitcoin, it does accept Alipay and more credit cards than playmoTV.
What we don’t like
As with ExpressVPN, playmoTV has an advantage over VyprVPN when it comes to pricing.
You can get VyprVPN for $9.95 per month, or $5.00 per month billed annually. However, that price is for the standard subscription, which does not include Chameleon, its key selling point.
To get Chameleon, you need to sign up to VyprVPN Premium. Premium will cost you $12.95 per month (the same as ExpressVPN for the similar subscription) or $6.67 per month billed annually (cheaper than ExpressVPN).
That means VyprVPN is closer to playmoTV on the price for annual subscriptions. And while VyprVPN does provide a free trial, it’s also shorter than you get with playmoTV. VyprVPN only gives a 5-day free trial, compared to the 7 free days you get with playmoTV.
Nevertheless, VyprVPN’s proprietary software is hard to pass up, especially given its ability to evade content blockers. PlaymoTV simply can’t compete with the Chameleon protocol and VyprVPN’s security features.
Of the options we’ve picked as playmoTV alternatives, NordVPN is our “price comparison” option. It has advantages similar to ExpressVPN and VyprVPN – and it’s the cheapest of the 3 alternatives by far.
What we like
NordVPN provides the type of choice and security you want in a SmartDNS alternative. You will find a strict no-logs policy, military-grade encryption through your private VPN tunnel, and private browsing features included in the software itself.
Additionally, NordVPN works with a wide range of devices, with apps for the most popular operating systems. And similar to VyprVPN and ExpressVPN, you can use NordVPN on a router, letting you cover all of the devices in your home.
Best of all, NordVPN is actually cheaper than playmoTV, if you choose the right subscription plan.
On the high end, NordVPN offers a month-to-month subscription for $11.95 per month. That’s slightly cheaper than ExpressVPN and VyprVPN, and definitely pricier than playmoTV’s equivalent subscription.
However, a 1-year subscription will get you the service for $5.75 per month, while NordVPN also offers a 2-year subscription for just $3.29 per month.
In fact, NordVPN occasionally runs a deal where they offer a 3-year subscription for $99. That’s the equivalent of paying just $2.75 per month for your VPN. If you’re in it for the long haul and you know you’re going to need a VPN for the foreseeable future, snagging that 3-year subscription when it’s available it a good idea.
Beyond that, NordVPN easily bests playmoTV when it comes to server capacity and locations. NordVPN has over 4,000 servers in more than 60 countries, making it pretty much equivalent to ExpressVPN when it comes to overall coverage.
What we don’t like
NordVPN may be the least expensive option on the list, but it requires far more time commitment than we’d prefer to get that lucrative pricing.
Since playmoTV offers its services for just $4.99 per month with a monthly subscription or $49 per year, the idea of signing up to NordVPN for such a long subscription period almost seems silly.
Still, NordVPN works well with Netflix and hundreds of other streaming sites that playmoTV will never get you access to. And while playmoTV only provides a 7-day free trial, NordVPN lets you try the service for 30 days with a money-back guarantee.
Why Use a PlaymoTV Alternative?
There are several issues with playmoTV that make using an alternative like a VPN a good idea. Mostly, these are related to internet security.
SmartDNS services like playmoTV are less secure
As stated earlier, playmoTV uses what’s known as SmartDNS. These services work by changing your computer or device’s DNS settings to a DNS server located in a different country.
The result for you is that you’ll get a new IP address associated with that country or location. After this is accomplished, any site or service you access should theoretically be able to let you right in as if you were connecting from that country.
However, SmartDNS has a few flaws. First, it provides no actual security to the user. None of your data is actually protected. Anyone can see what you’re doing through your connection, including your ISP, the streaming service you’re connecting to, your government, or even hackers. SmartDNS has no encryption, so your connection is exposed.
Secondly, SmartDNS is easily detected. Streaming services can easily employ Deep Packet Inspection (DPI) that reads the metadata of your incoming traffic and detects your actual location. Netflix is notorious for using this type of technology, and many other sites and services are now employing it as well. Unfortunately for playmoTV and other SmartDNS services, there’s no way around these types of blocks.
PlaymoTV is not secure as a website
One thing to look out for when using a website is the site’s own security. A secure site will utilize SSL encryption to protect the site against hackers. At this time of writing, playmoTV does not employ this essential security measure.
Not every site needs to have significant security. For example, if you’re browsing Wikipedia, you don’t need to worry too much about having your data stolen. But playmoTV is a paid service that collects account information and credit card information. The lack of SSL encryption on its site makes it far less secure.
By comparison, all of the VPN alternatives we’ve listed have updated SSL encryption on their sites, making them far more secure and trustworthy with your data.
